I agree a house is a lot lock in, but there are many other nuanced pros and cons to home ownership. - Homeowners can modify their dwelling. Renovations, painting, etc. - Banks lend millions of dollars to ordinary people through mortgages. S

On timescales less than a decade or so, this idea that rent is "money sent down the drain" is often inaccurate in certain VHCOL markets like the San Francisco Bay Area. Rent typically costs much less than a mortgage payment, and t

This makes no sense unless you're going to redefine what management means. > If one tech bro can organise a thousand CPUs globally, what is his manager organising? A programmer leveraging distributed compute is nothing like coordina

San Francisco is in desperate need of this. The only dark beer I typically see at restaurants here is Old Rasputin.

My guess is that Google will ship a commodity AR/VR operating system, which will be used by other phone manufacturers like Samsung, Asus, etc. to power their headsets, just like Android on phones.

Quality comments like this are what keep me coming back to HN. I certainly agree. I’m not sure exactly how, but it’s clear there needs to be some sort of incentive for institutions to actually achieve their purpose, but as soon as a metric

Oh neat! I used this when I worked at Meta about a year ago. It didn't support Vulkan at the time, so it's great to see they added that. It's nice that IGL abstracts the CPU-side code, but you still end up writing shaders for

Definitely AR/VR. I’ve been following it since 2013 and working in the field since 2018. I suspect many big Android phone OEMs will get into the space in the next year or so and it will explode in popularity.

I can corroborate this experience. Last time I rode BART, someone lit up a joint while we were in the airtight car under the waters of the San Francisco Bay. The time before that, I had a crazy guy screaming the whole ride.

Staff level engineers at big tech companies and late stage startups earn in that range, typically based in Silicon Valley, Seattle and New York City. Check out https://www.levels.fyi/leaderboard/Software-Engineer/S

It all comes down to wages. Sure, you can argue Canada has some stronger social programs or quality of life per dollar, but when you can earn 2-4x the wage for the same work by moving 200km south from Vancouver to Seattle, it's a no-br

That seems like a separate concern from productivity though, no? Whether you build the right thing is distinct from whether you produce a thing.

Google Glass was also only very primitive AR in that there was no scene understanding capabilities. There was no ability for the system to convincingly augment the real world (for example, using plane detection to anchor digital entities to

Depends on the use case. I personally undervolt my AMD 7950X in my gaming PC to use less power and thus generate less heat and fan noise. It makes a big difference.
