Connection doesn't need to happen in the workplace, but the reality is that most people spend a majority of their weekday waking hours working so would be great if building connections there were feasible.

I don't disagree with anything you've said here, but I can't help but feel this reads like a monologue from a supervillain who feels righteous in burning the world down because they believe something greater will rise from th

I'm sorry to hear discomfort keeps you from using VR. I'm curious how you concluded this? In my experience it's unfortunately all too common for people to try low end products like Google Cardboard and write off spatial mediu

Meta Quest is definitely not flopping. It's now believed Quest headsets have outsold the Nintendo GameCube. Quest 2 outsold the latest Xbox. I really question the narrative that VR is this niche thing no one uses. The numbers support t

I have no comment on the issue at hand, but I've got to give it to the French for their always impressive level of civil engagement. It feels like Americans are far less willing to take to the streets to support/oppose political c

It's not about the features of the phone. Not having the right tech is the modern equivalent to not wearing the latest trendy sneakers (or whatever). Kids can be incredibly unrelenting and mean, so it might be best to just get him the

The FAANG skill set is very different from that of more nimble organizations. I wouldn't call this incompetence, but more of a misalignment of incentives.

Your anecdote about your son's behavior is the kind of insight that convinces me that parents have a window into the future the rest of us don't. I'm relatively young (mid 20's), but even still it's clear to me the

I love this! I used to append "reddit" to my Google search queries to get best results, but the quality of dialog over there has really dropped in recent years. These days I've switched to appending "hackernews", bu

Some substantial subset of the tens of millions of players probably care. Call of Duty titles may not be innovative or particularly original, but they're undeniably popular.

Even software can move slowly because everything has to go through numerous levels of bureaucracy and review. Before you even start working on something, you often need to have meetings with stakeholders from various teams and disciplines t

This perfectly captures my frustration with Reddit. I can't stand it these days. It's been eye opening to read about technical subjects on Reddit that I personally know a lot about only to see heaps of confidently spewed misinform

Only infsofar as it's a loose measure of how much my contributions resonate with the community. I generally think very highly of HN so if I say something that's widely accepted, that's affirming.

I agree as well. I think it's common to start to see negatives as you grow older and more jaded. Some intuitive/anecdotal evidence is the generally blissful demeanor of children compared to adults. The world is not actually gettin

Depends what metric you're goaling on. The San Francisco Bay Area still pays the best in the world and has most of the industry leading companies, although the emergence of mainstream remote work is opening this up a bit. New York and

By what criteria and methods do you appraise the people? In my interviewing experience, it's very challenging to draw any meaningful conclusions about potential coworkers in the 45-60 minutes I get to speak with them.

Cynically I believe that person to be judgmental and self-absorbed in their motives for asking the question at the party. They didn't care about your answer, they wanted you to ask them the same in return so they could feel good about

This has its own problems. For example, it's easy to cheat and it disadvantages people who don't have a lot of time to do homework assignments, which is common for parents.

The original Quest displays ran at 72 Hz, and the Quest 2 just barely manages to hit 120 Hz for an incredibly small subset of titles. Most run at 72 or 90 Hz.

Agreed. Tech workers at large companies often earn income commensurate with the economic value they produce. When each employee nets the company 7 figures on average, it's hard to make a case that they shouldn't earn some meaningf

Yeah this has been my observation too. The best way to get hired at Big Tech is to have already worked at Big Tech. The next best way is to brush up on your leetcode, which is definitely not something founder types typically want to do.

This is just patently false. I live in SV and have pretty high living expenses, around $80-90k/year. If I were earning $300k, after 40% effective tax rate and CoL, I'd still save ~$100k. That's far more money in my pocket tha

I've worked at a handful of FAANG companies in the Bay Area and Canada, and I have numerous close friends working at early to mid stage startups in San Francisco. Anecdotally, those at startups earn ~20-30% less cash and dramatically l

Not a very creative answer, but a smartphone with an international data plan and large battery is probably the best tool in existence. I guess a universal power outlet adapter is pretty helpful too.

I sure hope this was intended to be sarcastic. I have always found my job interesting and rewarding, but I think most people (myself included) would attribute personal relationships to be a lot more fulfilling.
