Yeah, I debated that before posting. It’s all already public information, and I know it won’t do too much from an Op Sec perspective but I planned to edit the post once the discussion drops off the front page.

When I got my first phone number (circa 2000?), I asked for something memorable. The operator rattled off 0427 151 181, which sounded fine enough. Then he pointed out it was my birthday - 15/11/81. I think that’s pretty nifty, but

There was a nice little side-discussion about Chesterton's Fence on here recently - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31340408 (that's the parent comment that adds a little context). In my work as a business ad

An interesting note right at the end, so in case anyone missed it: this same launch is believed to be the source of 5 titanium "spaceballs" that fell onto New Zealand in 1972. While the odds are low of any space debris hitting lan

I don't doubt that coffee and caffeine can exacerbate some things. For me though, no (or at least, not yet). And I'm a fairly heavy coffee drinker (maybe not by HN standards?) - especially since adding fatherhood to the mix, I

Perhaps not tech-stack specific, but I've built my business career being the 'deep generalist'. From a visual perspective, we often think of the Specialist as Narrow-but-Deep, and the Generalist as Wide-but-Shallow. That'

In 2008 it had only recently changed names from 'Startup News', and YC was giving startup founders $6,000 each (+ $6,000) to do the program - this week I read about someone doing a pre-seed raise of $1.2 million!

Did anybody else have an issue with "She wants to see a 10% growth?", and then Excel autofills the following quarters linearly (+$100 / $200 / $300) not exponentially (+10%)? Never extrapolate your cells from just 2 fiel

On a similar theme, I often think of Victor Frankl - "Between action and reaction, there is choice." Another one I like: "A Founder spends a few years doing what most people won't, so they can spend the rest of their lif

I most commonly apply Chesterton's Fence in the context of new employees / managers. In that instance, it's more about naivety or ego ("I know better"), and less about needing to read the ancient runes to fully unde

An aside, but one of my more fun small pranks involved two fortune cookies in the office circa 2007. I extracted the real fortunes, and inserted two of my own. When a friend dropped by, I handed him one and took the other. His fortune read

I have a similar 'rule' (advising to small businesses) - as a company scales from 1 to 12 to 35 to 120 to 1000 people [1], they move through different phases. So I see a lot of my clients in the 12-35 person 'Process' ph

My understanding of “foreign sourced” is that it usually applies to things like pensions, dividends, rental income. If you’re working, the source of the income is where you do the work - not saying you can’t fly under the radar and not pay
