True for the empire, not true for the republic (which still took decades but not centuries)

'advanced culture' is in the eye of the beholder. At the time, Rome was an advanced culture and we have a bunch of details of their fall. Not to take away from your point - I agree and the current fall makes it more tangible.

Your proposed solution is in itself a privacy nightmare. Imagine Apple having to know your entire network of non-apple users just to not mess up your videos with friends.

That’s not how it works. Being trained a ton of human text doesn’t mean you can complete the next token for a program that needs to be logically coherent. Imagine all your data is Reddit threads and now I ask you what follows “goto”, how wo

Yeah it’s exhausting. Part of me wants the bubble to pop but another part realizes a lot of my stock is now tied up in it lol

Yah and this seems to be supported by preliminary evidence on the impact of AI on things like retention and cognitive ability.

The last one you list is hardest to fix. And that in turn causes the others. For example, if you have a stressful job, you might: 1. Sleep less (job stress or long hours keeping you up) 2. Eat less healthy (coping mechanism for job stress,

So from the Article they claim: "PayPal has since rolled back the code change responsible for this error, which potentially exposed the PII. We have not delayed this notification as a result of any law enforcement investigation."

There's also this website which shows ancient Roman roads: https://itiner-e.org/ . Note that some roads are speculative / hypothetical though. But regardless it's also a cool road map related to Rome.

Yeah I wanted to point out the same. This sizing problem is not as prevalent outside of the US/Mexico (leaders in obesity). It’s less prevalent in EU and even less so in some East Asian countries.

That's actually what the article points out. But I do think the language of normal vs abnormal obfuscates some of the intent. It's a 'deviation from healthy baseline' that they're talking about, and there are multip

“Why should Americans trust them”, I’d go further and say you shouldn’t trust any company.

Amazon is pretty volatile stock at the moment, as are most companies that chase the AI bandwagon. I don’t think Amazon is doomed but the companies chasing AI are in for a rough time. Plus continuing waves of layoffs will lead to more freque

I tried Obsidian to build a “second brain”. But eventually just reverted back to notes on my iPad (handwritten) and Vim (markdown) for typed notes. I actually think Obsidian is a great tool, but I just need something as low friction as poss

Yup exactly, their home rolled encryption is problematic in and of itself, but the fact that it lacks E2EE means you shouldn’t even trust it in the first place.

Telegram is almost on the opposite end of the spectrum of Matrix & Signal so I wouldn’t really consider it an alternative.

I removed Facebook about 11 years ago now. I made new friends who know I’m not on social media so we organize through text or discord. And for my core friend group they also moved to discord servers, so that made the switch easier. I guess

Meta is the easiest to cut of those. I don’t use anything from them as I don’t engage on social media, nor use their VR and AR stuff etc. Google and Amazon are harder to complete cut imo. I have replaced Google apart from using YouTube, and

+1, customers want their problem solved but at times they struggle to articulate that. When a customer starts saying “we need to build X”, first ask what the actual problem is etc. It takes actual effort, and you need to speak their languag

Not sure why this is being downvoted. It’s spot on imo. Engineers who don’t want to understand the domain and the customers won’t be as effective in an engineering organization as those who do. It always baffles me when someone wants to onl

Customer interaction has imo always been one of the most important parts in good engineering organizations. Delegating that to Product Managers adds unnecessary friction.

Yeah that was also my take-away when I was following the developments on it. But then again I don't follow it very closely so _maybe_ some novel solutions are discovered. But given how LLMs work, I'm skeptical about that.
