I loved the XP theme! It was undoubtedly very polarizing though, even to this day people argue over whether it was a beautiful step forward (as I believe) or a horrible Fischer-Price kids UI.

We know that they trigger an immune response, but that alone doesn't necessarily mean much. For example, an early SARS vaccine candidate triggered an immune response in tests, but that immune response in practice actually made SARS i

Oh that’s a good one, too! I remember that skin had an associated “uxtheme.dll” theme you could install on Windows XP, which was one of the best third party XP themes out there.

Yes, there are costs associated with running the App Store, but I would be very surprised if those costs came anywhere near what Apple is charging devs. I don’t feel that Apple shouldn’t charge at all, only that what they’re charging is u

I love this, like a trip back in time! My favorite skin was this one, which interestingly became the basis for XMMS, the classic Linux Winamp clone: https://skins.webamp.org/skin/d72ca73bdde779b18e8e8980962124... (For

I also get this one with HomeKit all the time! The underlying implementation must have basically no error case handling, because half the time I open the controls I'll get "device not responding".

Oh yeah, this is a great point. I can definitely see it not really being about money, and more about leveraging their monopoly to push their own competing services.

I still believe that Gatekeeper is a blatant cash grab and not a legitimate security feature. $100/year to avoid a scary warning about how your app is definitely a virus? It's like a protection racket.

Really hoping regulators crack down hard on Apple's clearly anticompetitive practices. If Apple allowed sideloading the entire point would be, of course, moot, but Apple's continued refusal to allow this is really the biggest prob

I guess the idea would be that, like with satellite phones now, you could theoretically use a hypothetical satellite internet from any country and get the same experience. It may run afoul of local laws, but there wouldn't be a techni

I've heard that was the case for some of the older devices, but they're really gotten better at it. I'm currently using an OG iPhone SE (a 4 year old phone) and I'm running iOS 14 beta and it runs great.

Well of course, but since the word can mean both things, it’s a pun regardless of whether or not the devs intended it to be one.

I still can’t believe they expect anyone to take Mastodon seriously when the main action in the app is called “tooting”. Yes devs, we get it, it’s a hilarious fart joke and you’re so clever.

Yeah, the "individual motivation" bug still really hasn't been fixed in most pure non-capitalist economic system proposals IMO. That's why I think a blend works best -- like what you see a lot in Europe.

I believe parent was talking about the setting to turn them grey — that’s still present even in Big Sur, if you pick the grey color as your accent color from the appearance options.

I believe one possible sequence would go something like this: 1. The area that contains your rental unit is rezoned, allowing higher density 2. The current owner of the building you rent in is now able to sell the property to a developer in

That even depends. In San Francisco, where there is extensive rent control, I've noticed even renters tend to also be extreme NIMBYs, because any change to the neighborhood might result in them losing their $500/month legacy rent-

You’re definitely correct that NIMBYism is a form of conservatism (in the classic sense of the word), but what I find really interesting is how effectively NIMBYism crosses party lines. I’ve noticed both very liberal and very conservative p
