I'm (naively) surprised this works in practice. It seems like the sending laser and receiver would have to be very immovable such that big wind gusts, or a large truck driving by, or large temperature changes in the structure holding

I think about this a lot with respect to society as a whole. Specifically, legalizing drugs, effects of social media, and universal basic income will affect the most complex system of all, 'society', in ways we can't possibl

I still get the busy signal calling into the Seattle area from the Midwest once every 4-5 months or so when it's clear the other end wasn't on the phone. I'm not sure I got that before. So I wouldn't say the problem is

Have you considered the time you spent typing this, the energy your computer and the HN server processing and storing it, the bytes that had to be transmitted to thousands (hundreds of thousands??) of computers around the world across who k

I wrote my senator who is in favor of the repeal and this is his response (which I don't endorse - just forwarding as a view point): "However, I do not agree with the FCC’s 2015 “Open Internet Order,” which abruptly decided, on a

Isn’t this exactly what made the stock market crash of 1929 so devastating to the US? And which lead to the Great Depression our grandparents tell us about?

I'm not sure I'd call it great news. But I too have stopped reading a few magazines that went all digital. There is just too much other digital competition when I've got a browser open. But when I'm sitting at breakfa

I’m all for net neutrality. I’m not for the government being everyone’s ISP as was mentioned. NSA in an AT&T closet should not be happening. It would be the default situation for everyone if we all had government ISP.

Censorship isn’t the only concern. The NSA and Big Brother are as big a concern if not bigger in my opinion. Of course, a private company Big Brother (Google??) isn’t that much better. But it’s easier to escape a private company than it

I'm not into watching gaming at all (I'd rather play), but this is really just another twist on 'Reality TV', and one with less dysfunction IMHO.

Anyone know of a simple way to store bitcoin on paper or digital that won’t depend on a specific app being available in 10 years?

Sure I do. But if one has an aim to be understood, it's better not to make everyone lookup what you're referring to. If something has a well known name, use the name!

I would never have guessed what ATVI was. So audience is important, which means for a public post, stock symbols probably aren't a great idea.

It was a small business conference in Wichita KS where the DOD was encouraging small business to work more with them. One of the speakers used that as an example of a successful project. When the slides come out (hopefully in a few days)

I was at a conference yesterday in the US where they casually mentioned they have a drone that can (now) find devices (phones) from 3 miles away to within 10 feet (or maybe 10 meters?) from a current IP address. The level of surveilence is

I think you've hit on it. I feel like I'm on a movie set watching the actors when watching 4K, as opposed to getting into the story like normal (can't remember the term for that...)

I've discovered something akin to the uncanny valley - 4K video. It looks so sharp and clear it feels artificial. Not sure how long it will take to get used to.

Because there is an upper limit (from my understanding) of the number of Bitcoins that can be created, their worth will still multiply by 10 or 100 or more, IF they exist and grow as planned. Splits only increase that value if you own pre-
