Interesting. However, it requires 5 megabytes worth of support code so the use case is somewhat limited.

Another article from the Wall Street Journal. How to get rid of the paywall? This extension works (there is a Chrome version too): https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clea... In the case of WSJ, the

There are many reasons for the 403 error. The most likely reason is that you're trying to access a URL that is not meant to be directly accessible from the browser URL bar. The destination might be expecting one or more of the followin

The article didn't give any good reasons either for or against dark mode. My only question about it is this: why the gray on black? I can't read that. Do people have their monitor gamma cranked up to 11 or something? I just find i

Many many books have been written about this and we're no closer to resolving the dilemma. Digital paper (email, etc.) was supposed to cut down on the use of real paper but it did the exact opposite. We printed more and more paper simp

My cat could use that too. Quite frankly, I do often wonder how our pets cope with so many hours of downtime while we humans entertain ourselves in front of our glowy displays. They get bored like we do. Animals are not that much different

Very insightful and timely article. Probably just as insightful and timely as the same article written last year and the year before and the year before that. We will never tire of being reminded to move our clocks forward or backward. Pers

Quote: The first drone that lands on someone’s head, or takes off clutching a cat, sets the program back another decade, particularly if it is filmed. Almost blew my coffee out of my nose at "clutching a cat". I have to wonder abo

Some paywalls can be bypassed by turning off the Javascript. For example, the paywall on Epoch Times. Not so for Wall Street Journal.

AI lacks common sense and needs to be kept on a short leash. AI developers also.

A responsible developer should never supply a pre-configured certificate (though many do exactly that). An unique certificate should be created for the specific installation.

That would need to involve more than the DNS. The browser expects to see the certificate for a specific website so you can't just redirect. The certificate needs to be forged. I don't think that is doable without a personal proxy

Would be nice to see the source code for this. Then I could write up my own app to do the same. We shouldn't need to be dependent on a website that could shut down at any time.

This sentence pretty sums up the issue: Chicago is far more comfortable with its sanctuary city designation in the abstract than it is when the notion of hundreds of migrants coming to someone’s specific neighborhood is floated. The article

One of the mysteries of life. I don't think people actually prefer them but perhaps they find the closed front more esthetic. Just one example of appearance holding more value than utility. I'm not bothered about toilet seats. I w

Host a CORS proxy server. Maybe like this one: https://kraker-remote.vercel.app There used to be several options available a couple of years ago but almost all of them have gone offline. It would nice to have more options again.

Considering that Hacker News is a developer-oriented website, I half-expected the responses here to be "pfft, I don't watch Youtube on Youtube anyway, never seen any ads". There are technical solutions to this and I don'

Facebook to Meta. Twitter to X. MindGeek to Aylo. What is it with companies dumping highly recognizable and imaginative names for nonsense names that convey absolutely nothing meaningful? Is this part of the process of dumbing us down?

Many managers have no concept of what goes into the design and development of a product. As a result, they consider their workers to be commodities, little more than interchangeable automatons. I know this from personal experience and I sti

"GOTO is considered harmful". This kind of thinking just makes me want to run off screaming into a paper bag. Language developers are, in many ways, the modern aristocrats telling us what we can't or should not do. I still mi
