Many many books have been written about this and we're no closer to resolving the dilemma. Digital paper (email, etc.) was supposed to cut down on the use of real paper but it did the exact opposite. We printed more and more paper simply because we could. Which led to the need for more storage space for all the paper that nobody ever looked at because it wasn't really needed in the first place. That only changed gradually as more and more work became digitized and workers got used to not having piles of papers on the desk. Ingrained behaviour patterns don't change at the same rate as technology.
