CSAM content on Bluesky has risen ten times in just a week
- stevebmark 2y agoThis doesn't really matter. We already know how this plays out because we've seen it on repeat. Bluesky gets a surge in users, then no one stays, no one uses the platform. They're missing too many features for Bluesky to be worth using right now. The most obvious one is video: no one wants to use a social platform without video.
- cubefox 2y agoTwitter initially didn't support video, but you could embed YouTube videos within a tweet simply by posting a link to a YouTube video. Sure, you needed a separate account for uploading the video to YouTube, but most people don't post videos anyway.
- iknowstuff 2y agoTwo decades ago
- fallingsquirrel 2y agoSo if Bluesky ships video support within the next two decades, they'll be fine. Or more likely, HN will just move on to the next thing to complain about.
- IshKebab 2y agoDon't be dense. Twitter could get away with no video because they weren't competing with an established alternative that already supported video.
- cubefox 2y agoI really don't think not having native video support is a deal breaker for many people. As I said, most people on X (Twitter) don't post videos anyway. Moreover, it's not clear whether the added moderation and server cost is worth it.
- icehawk 2y agoTwitter didn't exist two decades ago. Twitter didn't get videos until almost 10 years after it was created
- Retr0id 2y agoVideo support is in testing (iiuc you can try it for yourself if you build the right dev branches), and is rumored to be shipping in the coming days/weeks.
- cinntaile 2y agoHow does a big increase in child sexual abuse material on bluesky not matter? Wtf?
- pbhjpbhj 2y agoPerhaps they mean it's not a useful indicator of anything. If abuse material on Bluesky has increased, but overall on the web it has reduced (because for example Bluesky were better than other channels at policing content) then that, for example, would actually be good. A media channel that increases in popularity will have increases of all types of content. Whether it increases beyond levels on other media is probably the metric to watch?

- add-sub-mul-div 2y agoIt's a problem everywhere, and here it's simply scaling up along with the rest of their traffic in general which spiked this week due to another Twitter subcommunity exodus event.
- ChicagoDave 2y agoI could go forever without video and BlueSky is awesome just as it is. Hopefully the bad actors can be blocked out of existence. BlueSky isn’t going anywhere, especially with the clearly eventual demise of Twitter.
- blueflow 2y ago> Hopefully the bad actors can be blocked out of existence. This gave me 2011 Twitter vibes.
- ChicagoDave 2y agoBlueSky has better user driven moderation, though the scenario exists where the bad actors only see each other, which I guess is what they’d want. But that isolation might help BlueSky do its job.
- TMWNN 2y ago>BlueSky isn’t going anywhere, especially with the clearly eventual demise of Twitter. According to the media and on Reddit, since Musk bought Twitter, Mastadon, Bluesky and Threads have collectively gained 70 bazillion users on seventeen different occasions, and have caused Twitter to collapse and disappear eleven times.
- add-sub-mul-div 2y agoPeople who want content that's more substantive than gifs use it every day. Video is coming in the next update, but I'm not necessarily looking forward to it. The worst thing would be for Bluesky to turn into Twitter or Threads. But the fact that Bluesky has had time to grow slowly and organically and develop its own identity makes me optimistic it will avoid the worst case scenario of importing the whole eternal September from Twitter.
- skybrian 2y agoThis sort of prediction ages badly. BlueSky is adding missing features pretty rapidly.
- Retr0id 2y agoHello from 4 days in the future: https://bsky.social/about/blog/09-11-2024-video https://bsky.social/about/blog/09-11-2024-video (Bluesky supports video now)
- jzb 2y agoHello, I am "no one". I am just fine with their feature set. The only question is whether my friends sign up and are active there. I miss pre-Musk Twitter and sharing text things via Twitter, links to stories and such. I've never looked at a platform and thought "gee, what I really want is a TikTok/Instagram wanna-be clone".
- dumbo-octopus 2y ago[flagged]
- lanthade 2y agoEating disorders and dieting are not the same thing.
- dumbo-octopus 2y agoCan you give an example of the type of content you want censored?
- chronial 2y agoGlorifications of eating disorders. That is very dangerous content, especially for minors. If you want more information: https://www.klicksafe.de/en/verherrlichung-von-essstoerungen https://www.klicksafe.de/en/verherrlichung-von-essstoerungen
- dumbo-octopus 2y agoCan’t have anyone posting: > photos or videos of thin girls and women > Motivational texts, sayings and quotes for losing weight ?
- chronial 2y agoYou deliberately misquoted the article, you are clearly not discussing in good faith. I won't respond any further. > photos or videos of extremely thin girls and women or bodies that serve as weight loss motivation and ideal images
- dumbo-octopus 2y ago“Extremely” is an undefinable crutch word used to make an otherwise orwellian argument seem somehow humane. The second bit was quoted as stands.
- wpietri 2y agoI'm glad they're being transparent like this, but problems like this are why I have big questions about their ability to keep going. Social media Trust and Safety is hard work, and because it's adversarial, the job is never, ever done. The more eyeballs you have, the more your platform becomes a target for all sorts of miscreants. Centralized platforms need centralized response to that, and it's just not cheap. Last I heard they didn't have a sustainable revenue model. Has that changed?
- pfraze 2y agoWe’re doing fine so far. It’s a wild time but none of this is unexpected, or caught us unprepared. This is what investment is for, to help us build up the system while work towards revenue
- jazzyjackson 2y agoBsky has a revenue model?
- pfraze 2y agoActually we do have a pilot program going for registering domains via account.bsky.app if that gives you some sense of where our head’s at
- xelamonster 2y agoYou're becoming a domain registrar? Well I'm not sure that'll solve revenue but it's certainly interesting, I'd like to read more about the reasoning behind this if you have any posts or articles on it yet. Would also love to check out the code for a bsky-style registrar backend if that's open source :)
- jazzyjackson 2y agoRegistrar is namecheap @ a $5 premium. I think its not a bad price for users who don't want to muck about with DNS TXT records. https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-namecheap https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-namecheap https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-business-plan https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-business-plan
- Der_Einzige 2y agoStability AI/Civit AI have so many more users, and it's still not a problem apparently? for reference: https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/20/24009418/generative-ai-image-laion-csam-google-stability-stanford https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/20/24009418/generative-ai-i... https://www.reddit.com/r/civitai/comments/1e0qkn8/civitai_is_playing_csam_minesweeper_with_their/ https://www.reddit.com/r/civitai/comments/1e0qkn8/civitai_is...
- pavel_lishin 2y agoThese apples don't seem to have the same problem as those oranges.
- GaggiX 2y agoStability AI is not a platform, CivitAI I doubt they have more than 4.5 mln monthly active users.
- pfraze 2y agoThis is the head of T&S sharing about the new challenges that have come with the Brazilian wave. I hope it’s clear that the increased CSAM is not left online; we take this very seriously. This is just what comes with the increased attention.
- worstspotgain 2y agoIt's possible that the reason this particular item is attracting outsized attention is not randomicity or peculiarity. The competition's hype machine never sleeps.
- pfraze 2y agoWell, either way it’s useful to be real about the kinds of challenges that come with social media. It’s not hypothetical. And we’re still at a very small scale compared to most networks (9mm users)
- Waterluvian 2y agoDo you feel that this is a transition towards the “moderation at scale is hard” unending series of battles, or do you think it’s just a blip that’s totally addressable?
- pfraze 2y agoLike every other app we’ll constantly battle with it. It’s the job. And then disagreements about how we handle it will create controversies, and then that’s where the protocol comes in, where other apps show up and provide viewpoint diversity and a check on the decisions we make
- xelamonster 2y agoGreat answer! Love how you're never afraid to jump in with clear answers to tough questions, gives me some hope we might actually be able to have something nice for once. Bluesky has really been a breath of fresh air compared to how things are going with "the everything app".
- obscuretone 2y agoI used to manage the team that built textual scan tools for PornHub. 12 times a second (out of about 5000 uncached requests per second) we caught this shit.
- rjh29 2y agoI don't know this site but we're still doing the 7/7 thread shit? Really? Just put it all in one box please.
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- charrondev 2y agoWhat is everyone using to scan for CSAM nowadays? As I understand the tech is typically some type of hash comparison, but the prominent thing I see is Thorn which would cost like 10x of our whole s3 bucket per month. Is there anything self host able or open source? I’m surprised there isn’t a government offering this type of service for free.
- bigfatkitten 2y agoAt $dayjob 1. NCMEC hash database 2. Microsoft's PhotoDNA I don't think either of these are available to a community/selfhosted platform. Both are advertised as being available only to "qualifying" organisations.
- markx2 2y agoJust checked - they have no vacancies for Support staff to help. Make of that what you will.
