I'm not sure it's exactly breaking news that the most entry-level basic role in a department is boring and repetitive. The only reason this article is even getting run is because it has "Google" in the headline.

I've worked in places where the friction and overhead caused by the validation and QA process caused more damage than the issues they were trying to solve. As in most things, you need a balance.

Yeah, I'm not even a Dreamhost customer (I was for a few years a long time ago), and I instantly had a sinking feeling in my stomach when I read the headline.

Oh, interesting. I hadn't encountered that, but that's very annoying.

An aside, but wouldn’t you be better off with each person having their own Apple ID and using family sharing to share apps and such?

Yup. Similarly, I often find myself looking for dinner options on OpenTable, ignoring restaurants that don't take reservations that way, because the friction is so much lower. I know that OpenTable isn't great for a variety of rea

Calling people names, even if accurate, is corrosive to civil discussion. IMHO you deserve to be banned for that.

I actually was thrilled when I realized that turning the Digital Crown didn’t adjust the volume in overcast on the watch. With the stock now playing widget, I found myself far more often accidentally adjusting the volume than doing it on pu

I'm at the point where I don't do that any more, to avoid the shame of being asked about it later and having to admit I haven't worked on it in months. Some people say they find having others know about it to be a motivator,

One person (or a small group of people) wanting something very, very badly does not necessarily mean it's the right thing to do for the product. It's an interesting data point, but far from definitive and taking it as such would b

I don't think these are mutually exclusive. At work, my goal is to create products that people use (and pay for). At home, my goal is to learn and have fun. Different approaches for different contexts.

Peoples' definition of "reasonable price" in my area is effectively a price at which the restaurants have to either sell at a loss or lower their quality. I can't believe how many reviews I see where people call a restau

I use AWS for most of my DNS. Also thinking of UltraDNS and Cloudflare. These are all massively larger than Dreamhost.

Larger DNS providers are harder to DDoS and also tend to have more DDoS mitigation in place. This is not to say that it can never happen, but it's substantially less likely.

On the research point, why are research and teaching commingled? Both are important, but it seems that they require very different skillsets. Would we be better off filling universities primarily with people who love teaching, and are great

I think there's somewhat of a vicious cycle at work. Someone paying $50k/yr. wants more than classes in a run down building, and then a threadbare dorm to sleep in. That's a ton of money, and I don't think it's ridi

I evaluated tarsnap for my photos a while back, and this was the conclusion I came to. I would have been paying for basically the entire size of my photo library, which is quite large.

I switched from Backblaze to Crashplan a few years ago, and I've been MUCH happier with Crashplan. The biggest issue is that, at least on Mac, Backblaze noticeably slowed down the machines (multiple machines, not just a problem on one)
