I recently bought a M1 Air for $750 (25% less than regular retail) from amazon as a vacation laptop. I was expecting it to have quite a bit of performance limitation but the machine is actually fantastic. I think it may be one of the best v

I totally agree with this. Except when it comes to new platforms and media of the likes of tech we are collectively much more willing to examine and be critical of our own industry even on HN. However IMHO the thing that makes the news indu

Any platform is threatened by any app that becomes bigger and more important than the platform itself. They invested in ie for the same obvious reasons that Apple tightens control over apps on the AppStore. When you spend more time in an ap

I am as well, but I am refreshed by a world where computers were literally so shitty they still stayed on desk. And despite that they still had better interactivity than they do at times today.

I once wrote an entire application around dcop. Actually it was a tool for plotting your amarok songs on a 2D kde window grid and it allowed you to make little gestures and squiggles to determine what songs amarok would play. It was a prett

Dude this is trinity desktop: That’s kinda the point. Trinity desktop is basically a kde fork from the early 2000s that’s still maintained for use in modern distros by some guy. I gotta say with so much slowdown in newer windows, macos, Lin

That’s literally all compiler people do.. if we see a pattern people are using 80 percent of the time we find a way to make it better. There are ways to make ObjC better optimized at the compiler and runtime level but no one is exactly aski

People already enable pgo and lto which dramatically makes their build times worse all the time just to produce a shipable app/dylib. When large objc codebases (apple, meta, google scale code bases) ship frameworks and apps they basica

What part are you responding to? I in no way made any claims about objc versus swift performance. I said the way they have tried to address memory safety assumes more compiler optimization and less burden to the programmer than rust.

Yep. I think right now we just have too much objc code written that doesn’t need any of the parts of objc needed for frameworks.

Also my answer to your question is: I think both. If it’s generally too hard for compiler people to optimize for the common case then it will be harder for folks to build great software. I’d also argue that apple did not do the former in

Objective-C is probably the worst language I’ve ever encountered (speaking as a compiler guy). A language where you can’t prove anything is dead, where you can’t make any changes to the runtime to deal with the dynamic semantics is not grea
