Not sure I could have fit the link :) Realistically though, I could have. I didn't. It doesn't really matter why. I didn't follow what others said, so maybe it was a lot worse, but I do agree that what I said could not have escalated into w

Remember that time you disagreed with me and had to write an entire (factually incorrect) blog post about it? I assume you like internet drama.

I don't necessarily choose it, I just don't go out of my way (like most people) to be nice. I would argue, that what makes me who I am (a driven, passionate person) also leads to traits like being honestly vocal about things. Whether the wa

Are you suggesting I was talking bad about the Ruby community? I openly dislike Ruby (as a language), but I swear this project was written in Node, which I also dislike. Oh, and I could care less which language something is written in,

(I copied this from another HN posting) I was one of the people who made a comment about this. I'm also assuming the reason I was pulled into this is because people much more important than me said similar things. I'm not going to defend th

I was one of the people who made a comment about this. I'm not going to defend that I think attempting to replace sed/grep is a bad idea (especially not in 140 characters), but I will defend people's opinions. Everyone has one, most of them

What benefits? They're completely different technologies. They share very few characteristics, and many apps which are built on SQL using the ORM would not "just work" on a NoSQL engine. You also are only talking about MongoDB. Who cares ab

I assume that anyone who agrees with this post doesn't actually do programming, and would struggle to instantiate a Redis client and then use it in the simplest manner. You cant have a RELATIONAL mapper without a RELATIONAL database, and yo

Eventually you need abstraction. Python is fast enough, as is Django, that the abstraction costs us less than the value it provides us. That said, we do manage our partitions (currently) using an ORM layer (at the application level). We do

We have never ever used the Django admin, and I would choose Django any day of the week for a project that is web on the web and using a database. (In fact almost every single project I've ever built has used Django, and there's never been

Disqus wouldn't fit into 1TB of memory as a denormalized data set. It doesnt even fit (indexed, at least) into 1TB of memory as a normalized data set. At the scale we're at, you're required to make tradeoffs and come up with less than stand

As these slides are very old, here's some updates: * We use Flask and nginx in various areas now (the main app is still Django). Our realtime app, for example, is powered off of uwsgi and Flask. * There are nearly 1b monthly uniques across

Sentry is also open source, but for very different reasons than what you describe. I treat it like part of the business value, but that also means that many people can simply run their own, which means potential value lost (I wouldnt argue

Why should anyone create software just so you can have it for free? You're not entitled to open source software, or the goodwill of others. If they decided that they didn't want to continue running their product, they can choose to shut

The problem is DNS resolution isnt cached and potentially has to do a lookup everytime it does a connection. When I was doing that every request (potentially several times), it became expensive. Sounds like I understand it? That DNS mapped

It would take me more than one blog post to describe the architecture that powers Sentry, the various areas that have and can have bottlenecks (some more obvious than others). More importantly, this a few months ago I made the switch, and I
