I'm hoping they'll provide some more insight into what the breakdown of tasks are between the machines, and if that 800 million number is actually correct. It seems extremely high for what my absolutely-no-idea-what-these-sites-could-possib

I'd be really curious to know what their "800 million requests a month" means. When we actually added up numbers a while back, we were doing around 250 million requests to our Python machines/day, and we only had 200 servers (which included

So let's assume thats $500 in dynos, that's approximately 14 dynos. You have 30k concurrent users per dyno using Node.JS? It's not that I don't believe you, I just think you don't understand what you're saying. (Actually, it is that I don't

I wasn't aiming to trash Heroku specifically, but the post by Randall is very uninformed.

That's my point exactly. Everyone relies entirely (almost) on EC2 for mission critical business, and then they're left there with no outs as soon as a big outage occurs.

Everyone should take a page from the book of Netflix right now. It's pretty embarrassing to be anyone that's entirely down and can't do a thing about it due to an EC2 outage. How do you explain to your customers/users/etc that you were down

All services are billed based on time usage (its not hourly, its much more granular), including the database. That said, an outage is still an outage.

Don't misread what Fluxx is saying. The core of disqus and our primary data flows are still powered by Django and that won't change. New servers which are less complex (e.g. the realtime system) are generally written on top of Flask.

I haven't been with my host long enough to give them a reliable review, but they offer SSDs and are definitely budget. You'll have to know precisely what you want/how to configure the machines, but otherwise its perfect. Exactly what oyu'd

Cassandra, Riak, et all, are basic distributed systems with the notion of easing horizontal scalability. That said, they do not provide instant (or even close to instant) turnaround on bringing new nodes online. Even more so, you're still l

Also these numbers are not accurate. I was consistently hitting the 512MB "limit" immediately, even with lightweight processes (not sure how tbh), and I frequently would see processes complaining that they were at 450% or more of their memo

You point out some obvious benefits of Heroku, but you're failing to see some of the truths: There's no high upfront cost for physical machines. I paid no setup fees. I signed no long-term agreements. I'm still using "cloud" monitoring solu

I'm definitely not an expert on AWS, but this almost seems like the same process I had to go through with setting up my servers. I more or less knew how to structure the app, what software to use. So it came down to: - Setting up base confi

Are you sure your cloud supplier has everything in stock to add 100s, or 1000s of servers? I'm not sure how many servers Dropbox is up to now, but we've got over 200 physical machines (probably nearing 300, growing quickly), and much more w

This is true, but Heroku is not the only provider of services like this, and some of the same limitations and costs exist throughout the ecosystem. I would disagree that renting physical machines is going back to the 2000s considering nearl

In my case I was quickly hitting limitations of Heroku, and the allocated resources. That said, you could hit the same (higher) limitations even if you're not using Heroku, and even if you're using physical servers. My primary issues were:

I'd argue that most people use Disqus because its more powerful than whatever they had (or didnt have) and it's so easy to setup. I should redirect the point of my post to targetted more towards small businesses, startups, random hackers, e

I don't even know where to begin, with responding to the level of ignorance you've displayed here. Find me a company that isn't purely selling custom made-to-order servers that cant do next-day, let alone same-day turnaround on a new server

Some of these may be specifics, but budget, revenue, load profile are not. Dont have a budget? Good luck with that. Dont have revenue? See above. No load profile? Doubt you're going to end up with revenue. My skill set may be more wide reac

This is entirely that false belief I was trying to point out here. I'm not an operations guy, I'm an engineer. I spent a few hours a day for a few days and came up with replayable, fully-configured systems. If this were a full-time gig, I'd

That's a good point, and I think in those situations the cloud will fall over just as easily. A lot of that will come down to your actual applications architecture and how well it can scale.

That's unrelated to Disqus 2012. Disqus 2012 is indexable by Google without any software (such as a WordPress plugin) being installed on the host's server.

We've actually had support for this in our WordPress plugin for quite some time (longer than I can figure out, at least 2 years). What we're addressing with our new platform is unrelated to what the WordPress plugin already provides.

We'll be talking about this more in the future, but we have confirmed with at least one major index that the content will be indexed as expected within the new system. Edit: And since we seem to have already named Google, it's obvious who t
