Curious, what was the title and subject matter for the book?

There's nothing for C++, but I have started a book for C: http://c.learncodethehardway.org/ Why don't you go through what I've written so far and learn the basics of C. Doing that will give you a good understanding of the foundations of

Just tell me when you find errors so I can fix them, and then if you appreciate it buy a PDF/ePub when it becomes available. Actually selling something is way easier to explain to the tax man than a "donation".

I'm going to try it this way and see if it helps a kind of a "CLI rosetta stone". If it doesn't work I'll just have dexy generate two separate docs.

Yep, I don't know much about powershell so I have to go through it tomorrow to do the Windows side.

Yes, I thought HN prevented this. Anyway, see the above discussion and keep in mind this is a first rough draft.

Feel free to read the PDF, and I'll be putting it up for free since it's a huge benefit to my students if they know the CLI. But, PLEASE, do not pass the PDF around to newbies until I say it's ready. Having old versions with potential erro

Is it the word "hell" you disagree with or being told to do something? If it's "hell" I can remove that. If it's just because you don't want to be told to do something then don't read my book. You won't learn anything from it since the e

It's not meant to be insulting, it's meant to be a method of learning the basics of a language that works. If you're insulted by it then just don't read it.

Yes, sadly Microsoft (and to a certain extent Apple) have done an excellent job convincing people that the CLI is both dangerous and antiquated. So when they come to my other books and I tell them to use the CLI they have major problems.

Never said ranking algorithm. I said, there's a bunch of links (like job postings and YC company PR posts) that get privileged front page status with their own decay algorithms, yet they aren't flagged as "promoted". They're just mixed in

I normally find that, unless an essay is about mathematics, if it is based on a binary argument then it's just false because it's too simplistic to be based in reality. In this case saying there's only "trolls" and "super awesome people!"

Oh, now we're going to get into the perpetual argument of what is really agile? Agile's like porn. Everybody who does it claims they know what it is, but nobody can define it. Instead they call "successful" projects properly agile and fa

>Claiming to have invented the most well know and also the worst software development process is honest? They claim to have developed the best process, just like all the agile con artists out there.

Actually, this is refreshingly honest compared to the "agile" methodologies. Having worked with plenty of supposedly agile consultants I can tell you they basically do waterfall it's just their cascading stupidity starts with code and then

Yeah, I think you just need to sit down and figure out who you're really writing it for. When I wrote LPTHW I had three or four actual people in mind and I kept laser focus on making it a book they could learn from. They weren't programme

I'd say not bad for the initial draft. I don't really think it's for "anyone" though. It seems like it's written by a programmer for other beginning programmers. That's just my first review without going through it more thoroughly. Here

Yes, I hate that (?:) syntax. Who the hell thought that crap up. But, I will point out that you attributed the error to NL/EOL assertion, when actually it was order of precedence of | being greater than $ and ^. It's a simple nearly 1-2

Ok, both of you are wrong. It's got nothing to do with EOL, it's the parse order of precedence of | which makes it parse as (or (^[0-9]+) ([A-Z]+$)), but I was reading it as ($ (^ (or ([0-9]+) ([A-Z]+)))). Now I know why I should change i

Great, another example of regex engines not doing anything you tell them. I'll look at changing it but () isn't going to work there it has to be taught later.

I thought about trying but it's hard to dip into the regex data structure (if there is one) and also display it in some sort of meaningful way. Other than that, Regetron is kind of just enough of a tool to get you through the book and have

Uh, no, the intent is not to match all-alpha or all-numeric strings. It's to search for all alpha or all numeric. As I mentioned above, you're confusing search with match semantics.

Hmm, well the book is being written so there's potential for some errors, but I believe you are wrong here. You're confusing match with search semantics. Your above works because by default Regetron searches. If you turn on match it does

I don't think your opinion is shit, I just think your perspective has changed because you actually can code. The hardest thing for a beginner is just the syntax. If you've never written code before then the symbols in programming are alien

That's awesome. It's funny because I didn't even try to write the book for kids, but happy it seems to work well for them.
