There was an article in the most recent Economist that dealt with some of the limitations of modern AI: https://www.economist.com/by-invitation/2022/06/09/artificia... Hofstader and Bender gave the follo

I think Don Giovanni being thrown into hell is a narrative get-out-of-jail-free card being played. Most of the humour in the opera is derived from Giovanni's libido or shamelessness but giving him a comeuppance allows the audience to l

I suppose the danger is believing that we are substantively different to people who came before us, or that our current moral beliefs are correct. Our moral judgements may seem correct now but there's a good chance future generations w

I was at the opera last night seeing Don Giovanni and some of these excerpts from Peyps are fairly close to the behaviour of the titular villain. It's intriguing that recorded contemporary attitudes towards stories of sexual misbehavio

BSD devs tend to prioritise clean code over speed. I'm not certain of the implementation details here but their approach does make openbsd coreutils a more pleasant read than the GNU coreutils.

Yusuke Endoh is a god amongst men. His C program which creates an approximation of fluid dynamics from any text input is insane - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMYfkOtYYlg

I don't think the market will be stronger in a year. There is also an opportunity cost to studying over getting on the career ladder - more years of work experience entails a higher salary.

I literally bought a wedding gift for a family friend this morning on a site called prezola. Hopefully they are not related to this company. For our wedding my fiancée wrote a basic frontend on netlify and let people reserve gifts with a ch

Inflation is the most destablising thing in an economy. It would be wise to keep raising interest rates until inflation gets back to 2/3% even if that causes a recession.

I would guess comments are more insightful when the topic being discussed is less niche.

I would be concerned that psychedelics might add fuel to the fire in the case of body dysmorphia since one of their common effects is dissociation.

I read the spectator and enjoy its news coverage. I was trying to get people to read the arts coverage in spite of their political opinions.

I can see how the political slant on the news editorial can turn people off from the publication, however I have to say the arts coverage in the Spectator is always excellent.

Bash is a godsend for quick debugging and I can see the temptation to start writing production code using bash. It basically boils down to a few things IMO: - large bash scripts are hard to read/maintain - complex modelling chains need

I switched from twitter to Mastodon recently. It isn't a perfect replacement since the network effect keeps user counts low but I've found it generally scratches the same itch.

QE is central banks liquidising private assets to improve the balance sheets of large businesses. This gives them access to more capital and in theory allows them to invest more. It is controversial since the benefits of it are hard to meas

Academic Philosophy is definitely not like that. The amount of effort it takes to even keep on top of new papers being published (within whatever subfield you happen to specialise in) is extraordinary.

From what I have read so far the studies on clinical ketamine usage have focused on its (seemingly miraculous) properties as a short term antidepressant. Long term ketamine usage is not so well studied. Recreationally, using much larger dos

Completely agree with this. I think the notion that "drugs make you more creative" is a common misconception/fallacy. Creativity is hard to quanitfy. However drugs certainly make you more receptive to certain stimuli.

The issue is transmissibility rather than severity. Say it was 50% less severe but 25% more infectious that would cause hospital infrastructure to fail because the absolute number of hospitalisations go up as more people are infected.

This is cool. Appreciate the trip down memory lane with the python2 syntax as well. I think the effect might be more incongruent in python3 code where pseudo expressions like print have been formalised into functions.
