Except that commercial vacuum cleaners are huge, loud and cost 3x as much as a good consumer vacuum cleaner. But the bags are bigger.

I was a PhD student at a newly started research institute (started about two years before I joined). I really liked the place. The number one question is how to motivate people to join. For us PhD students, the motivation was 1) a salary an

I definitely prefer a bicycle bell to getting yelled at from behind. But you know what would be even nicer? If bikers had the curtesy to slow down a bit when the trail / path is crowded. I also love riding fast. I understand that crowd

Thanks for the video! Curiously, many of the boards in the video with planar transformers have the inductor integrated in the board rather than on a daughter board, so despite the difficulties it seems like it should be doable. Maybe for re

I wonder why they don't integrate the transformer in the circuit board, that would be even more elegant. Does the transformer PCB have more layers or heavier copper than the rest of the board?

OK, that's not how I understood your comment. I thought you meant that macOS always renders in 2x and scales down for 1x. That's not the case. (Also, the pictures in the blog look like they have been resized for the blog, so I wou

Could you explain how that would work? I thought DOS generally worked by overloading a host with mostly invalid incoming packets. Are DOS attacks that cause lots of outgoing bandwidth common? And wouldn't launching such a DOS attack be

No, it's not. This is a bug. macOS has two rendering modes: Normal (1x) and HiDPI / Retina (2x). For this reason, most apps have two different sets of assets like icons and other images shown in the UI. After rendering the content

Here in Austria we have a similar law that requires disclosing minimum salary for a role. Companies usually just post multiple ads if they are hiring for junior or senior roles. I don't think a job posting for both junior and senior de

The problem is not which of the two is the default, the problem is that only one of them looks like a button. It's good to use different styles. Symmetry is bad when you want people to make a choice. But in this example it doesn't

Exactly. In cases like this using an HTML/XML parser instead of a regular expression won't make a difference at all.

I think the Zalgo answer is an wonderful example of people thinking they are smarter than they really are. Spot the error: 1) HTML is not a regular language 2) Regular expressions can only parse regular languages 3) Regular expressions can

You make a good point about variance. Eg. I could take the car, which is usually the fastest, but if I am unlucky there's a traffic jam and I have to wait. Or I take the bike, which is slower on average, but there is no risk of a traff

How is it hard to say "You can go to a bar as long as you bring a confirmation of vaccination"? That's really easy to say, and pretty much everyone except for a few hardcore antivaxers would understand. I'm sure that 90%
