The "draconian" was a reference to a different comment by parent ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25038688 ). Whatever your opinion is about taxes and the middle class: It's easy for the wealthy to not pa

I'm not against taxes, it was my cynical way of expressing that it is impossible to evade them for most people while it is quite easy for those who already have more than enough.

So, what is this? His passion for the Mediterranian? Reconnecting with his ancestor's roots? BTW: All tax systems are draconian, at least to the middle class. Not to people who can afford creative lawyers.

As a layman: How is immunity defined? The German virologist Drosten said in an interview (a while ago, sorry, no source) that it is expected that survivors will stop producing white blood cells at some point. The next time they get infected

What makes you say it is hard to maintain longer lived projects? (I used to be a RoR developer for a few years, so I'm curious about other people's experiences.)

I read (maybe here on HN comments) that Vitamin D could only be the indicator. People who live a certain lifestyle have low risk of the mentioned diseases AND have good Vitamin D levels. But you have to live that lifestyle, not just take su

I found your comment quite cynical and hand wavy. The nuclear fallout affected a huge area and still impacted parts of central Europe. This goes hand in hand with increased cancer rates. Yes, better than dying immediately, but still not a f

Haven't looked into this for a while, but most projects I saw were using Amazon's API, which I guess has the largest international catalog of books. The typical next result is GoodReads, which would be awkward to lean on for build

Be sure to post here when you go live, I want this! I used Delicious Library to keep track of my books but it seems abandoned. I guess the challenge is to have an extensive catalog/API that makes it easy for users to add books to their

I started writing a master thesis in a MediaWiki a long time ago. Did not work for me, maybe lack of keeping a proper index. It was a data graveyard. On the other hand, so is my whole home folder...

Honest question: What has it done for society? If Amazon dies today, there is nothing I'd miss. Nothing that makes it irreplaceable.

Justifing this pile of money by saying that there are other billionaires (Jobs, Gates, etc.) is kinda weird. I'd rather compare his with the median wealth of Amazon's employees. Makes for a way more interesting discussion.

Yes, this also calls for regulations as to what the collecting companies can or can't do. GDPR was a first step into this direction.

Fair point about Germany, but locking down like the rest of Europe is not a question of gloves or medical equipment. There must have been different reasons for that decision.

Let me be sarcastic: Yes, it is very easy to have sufficiently fast internet (or even a computer) in a non-industrialized country. Even in the US it is perfectly viable to work 2-3 low wage jobs to keep your family fed and healthy and then
