Another fun thing about that thread is that Dave McClure commented on your edit of my pitch, and then 1387 days ago made 500 Startups second investment in Stormpulse in 6 months. :)

Had the idea in October 2004, did a breadth-first search for a business model for almost 9 years, and now finally ... convergence. Just thought the HN community would like to know.

There is one hallmark of a cult which this document misses: there is no legitimate reason for leaving a cult. From the cult member's perspective, this is really a manifestation of the problem of induction. Everything is going great

How do you solve anything when the people who are most aware of the problem also know that the problem inherently prevents the solution to the problem? It reminds me of an immune disease -- if your very means of getting well is broken, how

Agreed. I didn't actually intend any snark. The fact is, the URL was easier to remember for me than the blog link or Google query one, so that's why I used it as I was running out the door. I considered changing it later but hav

When you shift from customer development to company-building. In other words, when you stop searching for, and instead start scaling, a business model. See also: http://steveblank.com/2012/03/05/search-versus-execute/

I had my idea in October 2004. In 2006, I quit my job to work on it full-time. In 2007, my co-founder and I finished the MVP. No one came. In 2008, we got a big break and it was used by 4 million people. By 2010, 10,000 companies and 6.5 m

One litmus test that hasn't failed wrt angels is: how complicated are they trying to make this? Angel investing is not a time in your company's history for anything more than dead simple, fair terms, and quick turnaround. Avoid cute and f

I lived in Chicago for 6 years; being cooped up inside meant more time sipping hot beverages in front of my computer, which may be called sedentary but certainly not 'lost time' for a programmer.

I disagree with his assertion that clutter doesn't bother kids as much as adults. My kids always play more contentedly for longer periods after we've done a big purge or simply organized their toys. I think they get overwhelmed but don't

I would argue that Dropbox isn't a startup anymore. Once you've found a business model and start scaling your personnel (i.e. Steve Blank's "Company Building" stage), a startup is no longer a startup, IMO.

One of the most helpful things I've heard is the "very disappointed" framework that Sean Ellis uses. The idea is that if 20% of some user group would be very disappointed if they couldn't use your service any more, then you've nailed it.
