If you're looking for unpromising-ness + determination, how do you avoid the thesis devolving into "invest in everyone that's smart and determined since you just never know"?

After 5 years of bootstrapping, Stormpulse is finally getting some serious lift this year and I'm experiencing the truth of this post first hand. While not fun (growing pains are ... pains), it's encouraging to hear (from Feld's own mouth)

Special status isn't the point. They're simply cohorts and it would be interesting to see what the conversation would be like when segmented as such.

If you go to the URL in the code, it defines what a leader is: the 100 people with the highest karma. By define get_leaders I meant write the scraper, not come up with the definition. Heh!

I've been around for 2,017 days. Number of comments has gone down steadily, but I agree with mixmax as for the reason. Would any old-timer care to use the open-source HN code and create a vintage HN by automatically inviting anyone with an

Yes on learning new skills, but the nuance is that you quickly identify which of those are not core to your business and offload/delegate them as soon as possible.

When you say that "Bootstrapping a startup is stressful", are you only referring to the time before you raised the $2.5 million? How long was that? EDIT: According to CrunchBase you raised $500K two months after your company was founded, a

If it's <1% of internet users, most web designers will have already moved on. The only ones that haven't will be the ones where this user is a customer and he is unable to use a different browser. Then that developer is being paid to

I'm an upgrade laggard, I feel your pain. All of the comments saying that you have no right to complain can be summarized as "If I don't understand why someone is doing something, they must be wrong." I guess we've entered the age when bro

How do we recalibrate people's expectations about the value of software back to pre-2008 levels? One suggestion: Stop trying to push the cutting edge forward and start delivering value to people in the technical stone ages. In other word

You can always try moving "the line" between paid and free with A/B testing, though I admit it would be rather elaborate. You can also be sure that you're forcing them to choose by taking away the free tier altogether. I'm not sure how yo

Freemium is nothing more than an indefinite free trial with limitations placed on usage. I disagree in the sense that freemium is also a little understood business model, chosen by many entrepreneurs by default, with little to no thought.

Stormpulse is now B2B, but we started with a multi-year "free trial" for millions of people - i.e. freemium. This was obviously critical for distribution / adoption, but ultimately wasn't profitable.

But it's not safe to assume that you can take any product, make it free, and then make 20x more money with in-app purchases / add-ons / freemium.

I'm quoted a few times in this article, but I do think freemium can work. The key is knowing if it can be profitable and sustainably so given your product and market. I recently dissected this issue in a blog post: http://wensing.tumblr.
