Thank you, that phrases it much better than I could. They are very different tools(although I hear good stuff about P4 Fusion). Now if someone wanted to make an open source P4 replacement that would be a neat thing.

I guess I should have expanded more. DVCS is in direct opposition of workflows that include binary files(yes I'm aware that git lfs has locking, it's also centrally orchestrated) because you can't merge almost every binary fo

Also known as workspace views in P4. It's interesting to see the wheel reinvented. We used to run a 500gb art sync/200gb code sync with ~2tb back end repo back when I was in gamedev. P4 also has proper locking, it is really the is

It's not just about what your age bracket is, it's also about flattening the curve and lowering the burden on the whole healthcare system so we don't lose the capacity to care for the cases that require hospitalization.

Read access patterns matter more than cache sizes, triple digit improvements are possible of you have linear reads.

"Flattening the curve"[1] has a huge impact on mortality rates, just because people may not personally need hospitalization doesn't mean it won't save lives by reducing the strain on the healthcare systems. [1] https:&#

A coworker of mine once described engineering as "the ability to design something that can be built for $1 that would normally cost $20".

The number of people I've recomended Dealers of Lightning to and have come to this same conclusion is close to 100%. Damn Shane about Xerox, they really we're sitting on a gold mine.

Such a marvel of network engineering and game design, damn thing would run smooth over even 56k. Wasted many hours on that game, was truly ahead of it's time in '95 with massive zones and lag compensation.

I was waiting to see if your post was satire. Worked ~6 years in that industry, every placed I worked was a meat grinder and all the places my coworkers came from were meat grinders. There's an attitude that if someone has "paid t

Enrollment is up but it's not clear how many actually engage with local clubs. Age and gatekeeping is definitely an issue. It would be nice to see more focus on SDRs, GNURadio and things that connect more with a wider crowd.

Yup, I've got stories of some really shady shit Apple pulled with the FTC around their "design" patents. Put them in the same class as Oracle as far as I'm concerned. After it happened I swore off developing another piec

Yeah, I'm thinking back to an unnamed game engine that touching any of the core headers incurred a ~1 hour rebuild, ~30 minutes with incredibuild. Heck, if you've ever had a complex codebase with LTCG, I've seen cases where

While I have you here, please consider the option to install the software on-prem. I was this || close to not going unifi because it wasn't clear what the longtime support for unifi video was. I'm still not super-happy with that a

The problem I have with protect is I already have a full blown Proxmox setup with mirrored ZFS drives that I can easily expand. I lose that if I switch to their custom hardware. I've also heard it doesn't scale well to multiple us

I like the Ubiquiti cameras because unifi handles the webrtc handshake so you can run your cameras local and see them from anywhere while keeping data on-prem. It's a little annoying Protect doesn't have a software install but th

Really depends on your compile->deploy->launch iteration time. Printf'ing your way to victory works but I'm easily 5x faster with a debugger.

Ex-gamedev here, slight tweak on "fast", its important that the iteration loop is fast, sometimes that's code and sometimes it's other things. At the end of the day no one really knows what fun is so the more chances you

Yeah except I knew many people in the industry who would cross reference mobygames when a resume came in and not all of our hires were with direct references. Also this was a boxed retail title with no dlc so the credit list was pretty fixe

Software engineers aren't the only one that work in that industry. On the dev-side there's a couple routes out, however on the design and art side adjacent industries are even worse meat-grinders or not an option.

Not really a whole lot. FPGAs work best where you have precise timing requirements or really wide signals. Most game engines are about throughput and I don't think you'd see a lot of use for them, heck we had a hard enough time
