> the ideas of separate tools deployed and updated independently are not bogus No, but the idea that you should do that because you have a big team is bogus. There are good reasons to break some applications up into services, and this is

So is every piece of large software a 'special case'? Besides the Linux Kernel, there's every other OS ever written, office tools, browsers, video games, all sorts of SaaS apps. The idea that microservices solve some problem

I listed some ways that it helps. You get a strict, well-defined, easily-documented API. Yeah, you can do all that with REST, but I like having a defined structure for it.

I've used GraphQL on several projects now, with small teams (2-5 devs) where we control the front and back end, and for that case, it's actually been really good. It provides a solid contract that is easy to get wrong with a REST

People always think the next language, framework, paradigm, etc is going to solve all their problems. It's a pipe dream. You can write garbage in any language.

I think conflating violent or frightening scenes with tragic scenes is a mistake here. As a young kid I watched Lion King and Land Before Time, which both feature dramatic depictions of the death of a parental figures, which both lead to ki

It feels like they're just being stubborn with the window management. Like they chose how it should all work ages ago, and they don't want to admit that some of the choices are bad. They drug their feet on right-click forever as w

I'm inclined to agree. When a company watches you without your knowledge it's a clever hack, but when the government does it it's a creepy social credit system? If the hiring company secretly owned the taxi company, wouldn&#x

You call the argument a red herring, then name all the reasons people use a framework over vanilla js: conventions, learning curve, flexibility, tooling. Sure, the browser apis are great and always getting better, but I don't see how t

I didn't do actual scripting there, but through the gui you could set up events to happen on various triggers. That really sparked something in me.

A huge problem I had to overcome was learning to leave work mentally every day. The online and WFH nature of software work makes it easy to feel like you're always on-call and feeling some low-level stress. This is a quick path to burn

And Disney could have said "no" to any of his ideas at any point. He's become a scapegoat for bitter fans who can't see that Disney didn't know what to do after the first movie.

You can invest more time up front and automate it with an IAC tool and and CI tool to build/deploy. Probably nothing will be as hands off as Heroku, but there are lots of measures that can get you closer.

jq is great for shell scripts. Say your script hits an API that returns JSON, and you want to retrieve a single field. This can be difficult to do correctly with grep or other text matching tools, but is trivial with jq. You just pipe it in
