Well, I guess you are right. I doubt the speed would be consistent over 10 hours but I can easily imagine a bored teenager could sleep 7-8 hours and read most of the rest of the time. So the number drops from maybe about 500 words per minut

Well, no, I don't have MUCH else as a point. If you're reading that fast you probably not going to read as well. Obviously we're not going for perfect retention here but still. That's a ridiculous amount of text to go th

What if you read while standing? Do you have trouble doing other activities while lying down, like using a computer?

This is why it would be neat to have the book in an online format that can be updated from time to time. Something more than a blog, manual or wikipedia. That's in case one wants a book NOW and wouldn't want to wait until the lang

Umm, 500 books in one summer? Yeah right! What kind of books? Were they long? That's over 4 books per DAY! I don't think so.

The biggest problem here is being accurate and truthful to yourself. These rules are great theoretically but they are rather difficult to apply in practice. I've been tracking my intake and expenditure as accurately as possible over th

> $14500 This seems rather steep and definitely not the norm at Canadian universities. Take a look for example at UBC [1]. It's about 2-3 more than the actual number for most programs for domestic students. And also rather low for i

For example, the name on the paper when you graduate has to be one of the more cynical compelling reasons. The connections you'll hopefully make there as a student will be invaluable later in life. Some of the most ambitious people mak

None of this violates the laws of thermodynamics. These are all quantities that one could measure/estimate/calculate. Once you know the rough quantities then you'll have a more accurate estimate. Perhaps "net calories&qu

Actually, thermodynamics is absolute and adhering to the laws of thermodynamics is a certainty. You can estimate your daily caloric needs on your basal metabolic rate combined with a multiplication factor based on your daily activities. The

To lose 3-5 pounds per week is crazy! That's 10800 - 18000 calories less than used per week. That's 1550 - 2570 calories less per day. A sedentary person needs somewhere between 2000 and 3000 calories per day. You were either eati

> Between white flour and glucose powder there is little difference except for the taste. That's not the only difference. Simpler carbs are processed faster than more complex ones. This plays a big role in the body's chemistry

That's especially true since our bodies essentially run on glucose. Supplying food closer to that state means faster utilization, which in turn helps a lot in situations of physical exertion. I would love to see the rat experiment repe

No no. They are talking about habits here. Twins are more likely to have the same kinds of diets and exercises and overall similar lives, which in turn lead to them being in similar shape. It was difficult for them to find divergent twins.
