I think the person is confusing needing animals for food versus needing animals in general. We certainly don't enslave and eat ALL animals.

There are two options on the extremes 1. Keep the HUD in focus and the road out of focus. Your eyes are still seeing a lot of road information that doesn't necessarily need the high fidelity. This is relatively safer than looking away

IMO Bill Thurston is saying people are people first and mathematicians second. People often feel the need to contribute to the world and mathematicians often wonder how they can do it through mathematics. And of course he says it's not

I both agree and disagree. On one hand I disagree because mathematics is abstraction built on top of abstraction many times over. It can be incredibly dense with information. An example comes to mind - Stokes' theorem. It's an ama

Really? It seems that the pdf is somewhat broken (24 pages is 12 pages of the proper paper and the next 12 are from a slightly older version(it seems))

For what it's worth, the graph (Figure 4) on page 10 features the label "Human, cropped 97.53%" and later again in the comparison section but not in the abstract. Still, the whole thing raises some red flags!

I have an idea. What if you made this but every time you add to a block, it's height also increases (perhaps linearly with the power of 2)

Over the long term you expect the weather to average out and cancel itself out of the calculation. The question is does the headwind lower your efficiency more than the equivalent tailwind raise your efficiency?

I think that's as good of an example as any provided by the author as why the US should do away with the mpg measurement. If even the careful author can make a mistake like that, then think about the average person.

That's a good question. In the spirit of making learning easier it would perhaps "start" with what we teach children. However, that might be ultimately misguided because that would just mimic the curriculum and force the whol

It's perhaps more than a convention because this is also the limit that the function x log(x) naturally takes as x approaches 0 in the domain of the logarithm. Well, this is just a rehash of what the "cleverest" student does

I had an idea for a couple of years now of creating a wikipedia-style mathematics textbook that will be crowd-sourced, standardized and cover all of math in a way that's accessible to learn from on your own. It would have a kind of a z

This is exactly why you have things like 0! = 1, 0 choose 0 = 1, 0^0 = 1, the empty sum is 0 and the empty product is 1, and so on. These are DEFINITIONS and they make notation easier. They basically help the flow of mathematics. It's

Let P be the point (a,b) and let Q be the point (x(t),y(t)) of a curve for some parameter t. The tangent vector to that curve is (x'(t),y'(t)) and the ray PQ is just (a-x(t),b-y(t)). You need to make sure these vectors are the sam

Actually, to make a 2048 you need to make two 1024s. It's unlikely that you'll make two 1024s at the same time. Similarly for the lower tiles. As a sort of upper bound you expect the game to be over in about 1024 moves and it'

You are taking a sort of a bottom up approach of learning the languages. It's sort of similar to learning Japanese for the sake of it (which is fine). Language is for communication and of course programming languages are to make things
