Doubtful. It's more to do with population density, climate, and concentration of services.

I don't really follow. I interpret "there is" and "something" as quantifications, not predicates. What would be the predicate here? The general notion of existence, at least in natural language, seems to be a shorth

Yes. One is a statement that describes the world, the other is an ontological claim about what "exists" (whatever that means). What is added by saying the laws of physics "exist"? Note that we already know they are true.

The laws of physics are true; why do they need to "exist"?

As a philosopher, I recommend that anyone read up on ontological anti-realism before they get too invested in the answer to questions like these. Carnap and Quine (to say nothing of Kant) wrote extensively about the problems that arise when

Uncharitable metacomment aside, I can't clarify much more. You said he's a "hack," I'm saying it's relative. If Fukuyama is a hack, then that doesn't leave many public intellectuals left.

This is demographics in action. Reddit leans heavily under-30 and educated. More importantly, why is a more left-leaning Reddit front page your exemplar? The social, moral, and intellectual decline of the post-Trump Republican Party seems f

I imagined, based on the title of this article, that Dilbert had turned into something like the Babylon Bee. (If you don't know, the Babylon Bee is a deeply unfunny attempt at a right-wing Onion.) Instead, I found myself laughing at al

There's no social capital to be gained by actually having the illness. Pretending you have it garners sympathy, elevates your voice, and ingratiates yourself into a community of like-minded people (most of whom also don't have the

That would only make sense if these young adults were in a position to self-diagnose. These contagious social phenomena seem to arise most in young adults, especially women, who are heavy users of social media.

Interestingly, the OED's etymology suggests that "ampersand" is a corruption of "a per se and" instead of "and per se and." 1777 H. L. Thrale Diary Aug.–Sept. in Thraliana (1942) I. 145 The Letter co

Manuscripts were very large and time-consuming to create. Ligatures save time, space, and materials (paper and ink). Most of these conventions carried over into the printing age and were slowly phased out.

There are a few problems with this idea. A forward position is much faster, both in terms of aerodynamics and the muscle groups involved with the pedal stroke. It allows even a relatively unfit cyclist to ride 20mph quite easily, rather tha

I've felt neck fatigue around ~250 miles in a day. My solution is to regularly look down when it's safe to do so (not drafting). One idea I have is a Hololens-like setup, with a camera mounted to the front of the bike to allow the

Or we can reject ontological anti-realism. That is, what "exists" in the first place are linguistic conventions constrained by physics, our understanding, and practicality.

I don't know. Even if this anecdotal narrative has any merit, I'd still take doom-and-gloom over the recent infantile direction of popular music and film. Thankfully there's some decent TV still.
