If anyone is interested in doing similar work at UK Parliament, we're on the same journey that UK Gov are on, although not quite as advanced yet so there's a lot of scope to shape what we're working on from an early stage: h

For that 10% fee, a Government department gets a whole host of DevOps support, all the contractual stuff dealt with, all the security vetting / compliance bits sorted out. The alternative is they can go and hire all those people to mak

Individual Government departments (or more accurately, individual teams or even individuals) procuring their own cloud services and creating a technical and bureaucratic FUBAR nightmare is exactly the problem the Gov.UK PaaS aims to solve.

Not sure why this is here (it's been in use for a while), but for the uninitiated, the GOV.UK PaaS is an abstraction over AWS that helps to standardise what has historically been a fragmented approach to hosting applications.

Nice idea but could do with a key. Why are some bigger? What do the colours mean? What's the blinking about?

The point of the map is to remind you that lighthouses blink? I thought it was to show you where the lighthouses were.

Strictly speaking, it's not a "whole OS shipped alongside windows". It's an interop layer to allow you to interact with GNU based operating systems from Windows. Linux (or Debian etc.) is the OS.

Unfortunately, Windows at work as of late. But I've been surprised at how not-that-bad it's been. With Webstorm + Windows Terminal + Chrome, I have an almost identical frontend workflow to my previous job on MacOS, and barely have

I think it proves how utterly ridiculous modern life is that we feel the need to pay someone to lie in a tank of salt water in order to feel better.

Very true. It doesn't matter how interesting and varied the work could be if there isn't any work.

I would say that 75% of applications companies build for themselves could be replaced with a spreadsheet.

I really hope Rails make a comeback. Older versions of Laravel were superb - but when I went back recently I was shocked at what a clusterfudge had been made of shoehorning a frontend framework in.

It does seem strange. This is a problem that has been long solved elsewhere. I don't get the fuss over it.

The UK must be one of the few countries left where you have to show (often paper) bank statements and utility bills to prove who you are (or simply that you live where you say you live), and in the process revealing all kinds of personal in

Not too sure about this take. By this logic, the car industry would be bankrupt - people don't buy cars that often. Isn't the real issue that the spend vs. frequency is off? If I spend (on average) $1 a day on an app, that's

DevOps is a culture, where there is a mindset of "build it, run it, own it". SRE is a job title. A new job title for what used to called System Administrators, except Google called them SRE's so everyone else joined in.

This is hilarious, and sadly not that unusual. You really do meet some utter lunatics working in these sorts of agencies/software houses - it seems worse in the UK too.

> They want to pay $20/month to a single organization which has a hundred writers, also known as a "newspaper". I think the demise of the publishing industry proves this point comically incorrect!
