It is incredulous they are calling two weeks notice "ample time" for people to organise alternative contacts with friends they may only know via a handle and manually archive their years of messages. I expected better from IMDb.

I'd argue that using a terminal multiplexer like tmux or screen on a production server (as this article implied) often means you are doing things wrong. It is better to set up a service (systemd or other) and configure it to start corr

Working without a calling, especially in an unskilled job, is horrifying. It's main use is to convince yourself that you never want to be in that position again and motivate studying or a career change.

You can do this in Greenplum too. I've always liked the idea of moving general compute to the database, but usually in an organisation the databases are pretty tightly locked away and it becomes a pain to get the right versions of your

I think that provided your own desktop or laptop is powerful enough I would just use that for testing and development. Cloud wins out over a custom PC build due to the flexibility you get. Want to run an algorithm on 10 nodes for 5 hours? N

The public toilet 'problem' (in that public toilets must be bad) isn't really a thing as any mall can seem to handle this issue. When I went to Germany I was amazed at how bad their toilets were and I often had to pay to use

I've owned a couple NUCs. One that was fanless (Gigabyte BACE-3000), but a bit slow. I upgraded to an Gigabyte Intel i5 NUC, it has a fan but I can't hear it at all. Brilliant machine. I think the "quiet pc issue" is a s

Yeah I think the language change would have been the most interesting thing out of this. So many French words came into English via the Normans.

The combination of content providers and ISPs is deeply worrying from a net neutrality perspective. Evil is a strong word but imagine a future where ISPs chop and charge your for your data like cable and try to keep you looking at "the

We need to be absolutely strict on net neutrality and zero rating or we will end up with something a lot worse than Facebooks "free" internet. It is hard to argue against free Netflix etc but the end goal of these activities is cl
