“If you're explaining, you're losing.” I'm a big fan of federated/decentralized protocols, but these kinds of posts show Mastodon isn't quite there yet.

I don’t personally like it. It measures input factors rather than outcomes. I think surveyed happiness multiplied by life expectancy is a better measure.

I think whether we should build new nuclear plants is a question that can be discussed between reasonable people. On the other hand, shutting down nuclear plants while there are still fossil fuel plants in operation seems ill-advised to me.

Can confirm. Embedded development (this sort of development) kinda sucks, IMO. It has a certain sort of simple old-school charm, but it's mostly pain, although opinions probably differ.

We should focus our efforts where the impact:effort ratio is the most favourable. This doesn't seem particularly productive.

We got the answer to that 80 years ago. It's not that we fail to imagine what could go wrong. It's that we don't act on our knowledge. If we had course-corrected when we became aware of global warming we wouldn't have a

Conspiracy to cover up a mistake, maybe. There's no way to know, but given what is known about the origin of covid it's too plausible to just dismiss. We'll just have to live with the ambiguity.

Cuts both ways. You also get a fully functioning, self-contained team or 10. That can be attractive.

It has already. Chips that are ostensibly for graphics are containing more and more silicon dedicated to general purpose workloads. Turns out doing it like this this is usually cheaper than manufacturing dedicated parallel processors and GP

It's quite sad, but it is what it is. If you're not white you shouldn't stay there for long. Particularly not at night or whenever there's a football match. It's gotta be hard for such a place to compete with more c

Land-use restrictions and NIMBYism drives up housing costs. I don't blame investors from wanting to make money off of that. They didn't start the fire, so why not roast some marshmallows? It may be in somewhat bad taste, but they&

Hopefully we'll get cross-platform (desktops, mobile, and web) GUI libraries that aren't using webtech on non-web platforms soon. Flutter is already viable, I believe. There are also some interesting movements in Rust-land: Lapce

Teams is just so bad. If a company you're interviewing for has chosen to use Teams, what people do you think they choose to promote? What strategies to pursue? Clearly their decision making process is broken, and the consequences proba

Working to rule involves malicious compliance, which may very well be harder work than actually being productive. Just being unenthusiastic is not the same thing.

This will continue as long as rising property values is seen as a good thing. That’s why local governments promote price growth through land-use regulations.

I suspect this too. As people skill up, they become interesting to more productive companies. Some companies pay more to new hires than old ones, but that’s just counter-productive.

Depends. Software could be like lighting, where the cheaper it gets the more resources is spent on it. Right now it looks like it. Humans want to be able to see everywhere, and we want everything to be smart. Maybe a biotech revolution will
