Absolutely, and this is why I talked about harm reduction as a drug policy in my parent comment. The thing about addicts is that they will do anything to get their next hit - someone who does not have a heroin habit just has no idea of th

This is interesting, and confirms what I understand about heroin addiction. This is why harm reduction is such a good policy - addicts aren't sitting around waiting for something external to appear and help them quit heroin, if they wa

Looking at the official NHS pricelist for May 2015, 100 10mg Diamorphine (Heroin) tablets cost GBP 24.09 which is a lot cheaper than street prices... I'm guessing a GBP 80 (1/16 oz) per day habit could drop to around GBP 10-15 (no

> Once you're addicted to drugs, you have to steal to pay for that habit. Not at all. Of course, you could just get a job that pays enough to support your habit? Software Engineering works for me, for example, and has allowed me to

> Being tarred with the same brush as addicts is quite offensive Actually, that attitude itself is offensive. Addiction is a serious mental health problem, and should not be stigmatized.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_policy_of_Portugal for an example of decriminalisation of posession of all drugs, even heroin. Dealers are still prosecuted, but users are not. This seems like a sane solution.

Keeping drugs in your mouth to allow swallowing quickly when stopped by the police is SOP for both heroin and crack cocaine dealers in most places I have experience of purchasing on the street. Once swallowed, a pat-down search finds nothin

Hell, in the UK doctors often won't even prescribe addicts Methadone. For example, I had to go to a separate service, the CDPS (Community Drug Problem Service, says it all, really) where you are basically treated like criminal scum, no

As long as you have the funds, say from a well-paying technology job, you should be able to manage your habit. I discussed this in another thread previously (see the comment history for this throwaway account) and pointed out that I have ha

I don't know. For me, the harmful part is not the heroin per-se, it is the addiction itself. The mentality created by such a powerful addiction is what is most damaging, the heroin itself less so. Although I have ended up in hospital

+1 on the Naloxone. Here in the UK the NHS harm reduction policy is to provide free Naloxone injection pens after some short training; this is advertised in all needle exchange locations. I think this is an excellent idea, and would hope th

With the caveat that I'm an absolute idiot, and if you try and emulate any of this, you're even more of an idiot, then why not... I both shoot up and smoke. Particularly when I'm working it helps to have injected at lunchtime

That's what a heroin addiction means. Daily use, or withdrawl, which is really not as much fun as it's made out to be on television...

So, I have been a heroin user (addict) for a long time, about fifteen years. I have a great job, as a senior engineer in a start-up, and have worked almost continually in IT while maintianing my habit. I've tried to quit, several times
