You stop, and not only does stress trigger your compulsion to seek that comfort, even if you're not otherwise feeling stress, you now start to feel pain, or fear feeling pain from withdrawal symptoms. This is absolutely on the button. It's a vicious, vicious circle, and incredibly hard to break out of. I have a good job, and own my own home, and I find it difficult to quit heroin, and still haven't managed. I know that's 100% up to me, but fuck if it doesn't _feel_ like the drug is in control much of the time. Just imagine what it must be like if you're unemployed and homeless...
