I know people celebrated Microsoft's decision to do this in IE10, but this is what many of us were saying would happen. The relationship with the Do Not Track flag was always tenuous so flagrantly ignoring the spec (which indicates that de

I think the author is trying to point out that you don't have to be a jerk about it. Its one thing to say "Hey guys when you run X, your computer literally catches on fire" and another to say: "HAY GUYS, AUTHER X SUX0RS AND THERE APP BLOWS.

Constant surveillance is one of those societal boundaries where the line is hard to find. We all agree that public spaces are... public but if a plane can follow everywhere you go and record all of it, you start to get into weird creepy st

If only there was competition in even the largest cities. Large parts of NYC (largest city in the US) are offer only Time Warner. As in you cannot get anything else other than wifi/dialup.

stuff like this really drives home my fear of a dystopian future where police bots patrol the skies using all sorts of cameras and sensors to find 'the bad guys'. Facial recognition, thermal cameras, speech patterns and other tech we haven'

Honestly the modern moral of the story is bandcamp or indiegogo or kickstarter or some other service. I'll be the first to say it is going to be much MUCH harder than taking a record deal but we do live in a time where its possible to stay

If they code some "secret" features and then release the code... why does it matter it was coded in secret? This seems to be such a non-issue. In fact, Shuttleworth's mistake here was talking about it at all. He is paying to have code dev

That is fine, but it is a flaw on your part to not listen to good arguments. Good arguments can be made by the worst of people.

There isn't anything wrong with bringing up the hypocrisy, I just see many people dismissing his point. He isn't wrong to say we should reform patents. Even if he has some ulterior motive it doesn't make his point not valid. You can mark

Ah, you may be right. I've always heard it described as a kind of straw man because you are discrediting an argument by discrediting your opponent in a specific way.

People have already been making this mistake: calling out Jeff Bezos over Amazon's one-click patent is a strawman by the name of tu quoque ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque ). This is a non-argument. Being a hypocrite doesn't make yo

steam isn't an open 'app store' though. It is entirely curated through valve. Valve chooses the games to list and if they aren't happy, they will not ask you to list with them. They could easily refuse to sell games if you did that.

So the internet should just be a simplified app store and hypervisor/VM? I like the text based internet! The fact that I can go to a website, right click and view source is the greatest part of the internet!

I find it super useful to get a quick insight into a random page. As I'm still learning a lot about HTML, I can go to a website and see a quick visual breakdown of how the elements are composed together.
