ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen3 would be a direct alternative. Also look at X1 Carbon (lighter but only 16GB RAM), T-series (cheaper but heavier), P-series (performance, but big and expensive).

Nextcloud Talk is pretty painless to install and mostly works. Last problems I remember were with with clients not always ringing and connecting, especially over 4G. I've used it with family for 1-1 video calls for a while and it was g

$60/year is not cheaper than $100 one time, unless you plan to run the RPi for one year and then throw it away.

Would you feel better with a 3000 line install script inside a package? Or maybe you would prefer the same 3000 lines of code nicely compiled in a single binary?

You can find many low priced (and low spec) VPS deals on https://lowendbox.com . Just keep in mind you generally get what you pay for.

In Europe (at least) you need an AM license to drive a 50cc scooter, so also an Ami. If your license is suspended, you cannot legally operate _any_ motor vehicle.

Did anyone ever come up with a workable method of preventing this kind of rent seeking that plagues domain names? The best scalable and impartial methods that I’ve seen mentioned were high renewal prices and limits on the number of domains

Not hard at all, if you add a 48V DC power supply ($20 on Amazon) in series with the wires anywhere in the house, you will be able to pick up any phone and talk to the others. For ringing apparently you need 60-100V AC, I'm not sure wh

An infinitely simpler version of this is to connect the phones together with a power supply (48VDC) over two (long, cheap) wires to get a good old telephone line -- with no computers involved. Add in some hand cranks to also get the phones
