Having never had a "normal" job per se (okay, I bagged groceries for a year when I was younger), I still find it hard to believe that it can take two weeks just to get something deployed. Maybe one day I'll finally truly believe all the s

After living and working in Boston since June, here's my take, in the form of completely random thoughts: - It's generally hot as balls in summer and has already gotten quite cold. Neither of these particularly bother me, assuming A/Cs and

I bought Beginning Python from APress, read through it in a day or two, then just started hacking. From then on the only things I used were the official Python library reference and any existing code I happened to be hacking on. Occasiona

That sounds amazing. On my first day of Calculus, the Professor began by assuming we already knew Calculus because he was retiring after the Semester and had pretty much lost the will to teach. He ended up using the word "obviously" a lot a

We have Comcast and I've found that if I limit the upload to less than 50% of the cap the system never reacts.

µTorrent gets a lot of praise, and for all I know rightly so, but I am curious about the advantages of µTorrent on Mac over Transmission . Glancing at the feature list, it seems like they're pretty equivalent.

How convenient, considering I am returning to Vim after a very long absence! Step 1: Start reading online. Step 2: Buy it because releasing books for free is friendly.

No due dates. That's something that helps me. If I give something a due date, I will procrastinate until the due date has arrived (or in the case of non-critical stuff, I might just not do it at all). It doesn't even matter what the task is

Perhaps phrasing your original comment differently would help clarify: "That's because you don't have children" You haven't actually proven me wrong in any sense, you've just presented an alternate reality where I would be wrong, which

Bulverism is not a valid form of argument. I would likely sing a different tune were I currently on fire, so I fail to see your point.

One time I outsourced the creation of a simple Wordpress template which I didn't have time to do. I paid $300. Despite being given a pre-cut Photoshop file, the people could not figure out simple CSS bugs or even create the CSS necessary

Yes, some , but not most . I switched from Subversion to Git myself a couple months ago and it took a week or two, but I learned "the git way" of doing things. Yes, I would need to look up the command to remove a remote branch, but I have

Version control in general is not meant for "ordinary users"; it's for developers. I mean, sure, it can serve as a versioning system for just about anything, but it is overwhelmingly used for code. Git doesn't need to be easy for my Dad t

Yeah, it sucks not being able to remember much from my childhood, but it's quite convenient to essentially be reborn every few years. The timing thing can become an issue... Mom: "Well hello, stranger!" Me: "Come on, I just called you guys

Oh, well if you're referring to petty, childish stuff like that, I have no argument. Telling the difference can be hard sometimes, so all I can really recommend is that you keep an open mind. You seem to be doing that, though. American B

I didn't look at all the pages, but Google News' 1310 errors are caused in large part by the fact that they don't even declare a doctype. The use of the font tag (and not even quoting attribute values) is pretty embarrassing, but as prev

Coincidentally, our new issue of Wired arrived today and I suggested that they weren't at risk of going under so long as at least 50% of the magazine is ads. At least until people stop buying it because of that.
