I like Austin Kleon's insights here [1]: "A day job gives you money, a connection to the world, and a routine. Freedom from financial stress also means freedom in your art. As photographer Bill Cunningham says, 'If you don’t

It really comes down to the time between eating vs not. Sustained periods of fasting have different affects, most notably beginning after 4-24 hours but most impactful (for health) between 24-72 hours or more. Breaking the fast occasionally

This is a fantastic, free resource. Excellent intro for those unfamiliar with basic HTML or Python, plus a quick and easy route to building something that works. It helps that the entire thing is really well written. I'm surprised this

Similar to the linked story here: the US currently has a President with no political experience, who has also hired family members for prominent roles in the government.

(Avoiding the pull to reference US politics here.) What would the implications be if a similar event occurred at, say, Google? Would it even be possible? It seems that the onus for verification and in-depth analysis of a candidate falls ont

You can tell the experience level of a designer by the number of unnecessary animations and transitions they put into an experience. The two are often inversely correlated.

Yeah, making payments (via Messenger) has been around for a very long time (March 2015 is the earliest I've known about it). This does appear to be a type of rebranding, but more importantly a push for Facebook to begin integration wit

Your first point rings so true it hurts. I've talked with many of my now manager peers and they seem to not understand that simply walking into a room with "manager" or "director" in your title gives you almost imme

Isn't what you're describing precisely what senior ICs should be doing more of? I agree with OP, the purpose of a manager isn't to manage the technical side of things but rather the people side. It's why they have direct

In most complex systems the reality is people will encounter harm. The commercial airline industry is a good example of progress through crashing. In 2017 there were zero reported accidentally deaths [1]. Compared to 1972, one of the most d

Thank you for the kind words! I started coding long, long ago in order to build my web portfolio (back before site builders were a thing). As a result I saw how empowering coding can be. I've always felt being able to code software giv

I only recently (as of a few weeks ago) stopped fully supporting my apps because I want to invest more time in other efforts. I made a comment elsewhere here (and updated the article to state) that downloads currently are around 40 each wee

Wow thank you! I’ve always disliked the icon I came up for this, and I hadn’t ever considered the “Snap” as relation to the app/company aspect to the name (I just liked the idea of “snap”ping a photo and highlighting it.

I just looked at the lifetime stats for the app and in total it only ever generated ~$4,000 in profit. I would often change the price to 1. See if I could squeeze a few more dollars out of the work and 2. Generate more downloads. A fun &quo

This is accurate. I should have possibly mentioned in more detail that at the time I had a lot of experience with prior apps, so whipping another one together—particularly for such a simple concept—is trivial. I’m surprised anyone here thin

I'll bite because it's a reasonable question. I think linking to paywalled content is allowed because there are fairly easy ways around paywalls, but posting a roundabout directly goes (I believe) against HN policy. An example of

Really excited to see this. The built-in code editor feels like a small step-change, but it's one of the features I miss most from Framer classic. As a designer, being able to easily jump between code and design for complex prototypes
