Nooooo, please don't let them get involved in the actual work! EDIT: Maybe I should politely rephrase that: If they're anything like my previous non-technical managers, I'd rather they make the most of their talents elsewhere. Moving back o

Just wondering... If you had a software calculator such that after you typed in the question, the calculator returned, say, four possible answers, you chose one, and the calculator confirmed or corrected you, would that infringe on this pat

I think there's a lot of truth in the criticisms but is the harsh tone really needed? Seems to me as though they're trying out small design changes, listening to feedback (as evidenced in this page) and improving things as they go along. So

I, too, would like to see other browser vendors follow and I don't see the same obstacles as with video codecs so there's hope yet. Microsoft's plans for IE auto-updating should also help (if they decide to support WebP) but admittedly it'd

Good points. I hadn't thought about the increased barrier to entry for new rendering engines but you're quite right.

I'm probably a tiny minority but I don't like that CSS is becoming so bloated with features that overlap fully-fledged programming languages. Yes, it's becoming more powerful but I wonder if some of this is due to an inherent "right, what c

Thanks for the further explanation. I love it when HN throws up gems like this.

I agree with the problems, so for website owners, are there examples of "good" policies or templates to learn from?

While I enjoy the discussion of differing strategies, I don't see why it has to be an issue of who's right or wrong. If both authors have created good content, their price point allows them to sleep soundly at night and they wake up to posi

He's also using a timescale of just 48 hours for the comparison. Over the long term, I would have thought a greater number of customers would have a greater impact on word-of-mouth recommendations and reviews, leading to more sales.

Agree with the concerns about privacy, but I also wonder what happens if I visit such a country as a tourist. Do I have to buy a pre-loaded device on arrival, or do I use my existing phone and pay whatever fees my operator sets?

Agree. Getting tired of the "you should be using Chrome" messages although it works fine in Opera (haven't tried Firefox). It smacks of "we only tested in one browser", even though that's probably not the case. Having said that, it's a nice

Indeed - he talks about the First Google Maps War (and later the possibility of a Second), yet the first line of the article admits it was "almost" a war. Sensationalist headline IMO.

Kill it off? I don't think so. Avoid using it if it's not the right tool for the job? Certainly. As a simple cross-browser key-value storage mechanism it beats cookies hands down in my experience, but obviously doesn't compare to database-s

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I also like this "How to safely store a password" post from a couple of years ago that has similar advice, although it concentrates on bcrypt: http://codahale.com/how-to-safely-store-a-password/

I guess there's good advice here, but I'm browsing on a mobile and ironically the "view this document" link is disabled (and therefore unclickable).

Agree, and unusable on a mobile unfortunately. It says my browser is not up-to-date - more like someone's web dev skills are not up-to-date. It's a very good project but just feels like it's trying to be too clever.

Hardly useless, if it degrades gracefully. In this case, the fallback in IE 8 & 9 seems to be perfectly usable for me (I haven't tested older versions).
