From the user login screen, select the classic desktop from the bar at the bottom. This works well on my machine with roughly the same spec. EDIT: Come to think of it, I think I heard they'd removed this in Ubuntu 11.10. It's there on 11.04

There's already a public Opera labs build with webcam support: http://labs.opera.com/news/2011/10/19/ EDIT: It's a dev build so there's no UI (i.e. it doesn't ask for permission to access the camera). There's also a known issue with some

I always appreciate Patrick's willingness to share information, but won't be using this deceptive tactic. Sad to see it voted to the top of HN.

You can hear the man himself talk about the rebuilding project here: http://www.cbc.ca/spark/2011/10/full-interview-john-graham-c...

You deserve the attention! It's a great game and refreshingly original. I've got several colleagues playing it now. Looking forward to the planned improvements...

Dear Mr. Editor, You have until next Tuesday to put the <time> element back in the spec. If you don't, we'll do it for you. Lots of love, HTML WG Chairs

Element names are not designed to be hooks for CSS and JS - they are designed to have meaning, to create a semantic web. This can't be achieved with arbitrary names. For example, pre-HTML5 sites often use a variety of <div id="head">

It's probably just me, but I can't help feeling it's a bit underhand to offer something for sale that doesn't exist yet (unless you make it clear upfront).

"I get the impression kids are a bit slippery in that regard." True. Come to think of it, I'm middle-aged and I'm still like that.

I wouldn't call this a surrender. Google seems to have bought some time to enable it to come up with a workaround while being seen to be compliant.

Looks like a good idea. Anything to improve personal finance education for children has to be applauded. There doesn't seem to be much structure or categorisation of the videos unfortunately. Surely there should be some basic concepts intro

DDG in general seems to do a much better job of second-guessing what I'm looking for. Amazing how good it's become and that Google is (in my experience at least) playing catch-up.

It's not just missing features or bickering over semi-colons - the much bigger issue is the fragmentation highlighted by Brendan Eich and quoted in the article.

This seems like a step backwards for accessibility. Screen-reading software would end up reading various individual letters to (probably confused) low-vision users. There may be a good use-case somewhere but please use with caution.

Ideally you could use the input element with type=datetime for browsers that support it, and a date widget fallback for browsers that don't. This should provide a better experience for users and hopefully less support issues for you.

Yes. I couldn't get the IE6 disk to work but IE8/Windows 7 works nicely. Note that you shouldn't need cabextract but you may have to install p7zip-rar to extract the exe/rar files.

Correct. If you enable Turbo in Opera Mobile or desktop, all traffic is sent through a proxy server which converts images into WebP format. The quality is better than when we used jpegs and the file sizes are much smaller. (Disclaimer: I wo
