This is certainly true for the American West. Unfortunately in places like Patagonia the lenga trees never had to adapt to natural fire, so man-made fires are catastrophic.

I'm not sure about redwoods, but tropical rainforests take something like 5,000-10,000 years to return to pristine old-growth state.

I'm the opposite. I have ADHD and I function much better with meetings, talking it out with other programmers, and the cacophony of noise from an open office. Everything distracts me anyway, so I'd rather it be work stuff than my

Yeah we use pull requests for the coarse-grained stuff and leave the small commits, which should also have good comments, intact. Maybe other shops use pull requests differently.

This exactly. I'd rather pinpoint the issue to a small commit with only a few changes vs. "well I know which feature caused the issue, now to wade through 65 changed files."

Same, and I've worked on some large, long-running projects. But never at the scale of a big tech company. I've used git bisect the few times I've had to diagnose an issue that wasn't detected immediately, which gets you

Yeah if you could get NPM to allow JSONC in package.json, that'd be great.

Can someone explain to me why JSON can't have comments or trailing commas? I really hope the performance gains are worth it, because I've lost 100s of man-hours to those things, and had to resort to stuff like this in package.json

Regex is like half my questions to it. Hmm 15 minutes fighting with Javascript regex weirdness (wait do I have to backslash the backslash that backslashes the slash?), or 20 seconds with ChatGPT.

I only ask it code questions. It saves so much time on stuff like bash scripts, which are not my expertise, but I still have to do every now and then. I've asked it stuff about the Mesoamerican calendar, which I already heavily researc

Yeah I've told it thanks, and it was appreciative. But I know it doesn't really care. Again, I am crazy for stressing over this. I realize that.

Am I the only one who feels bad for asking ChatGPT a "dumb" question that I know I should know, or not saying thank you when it gives me an answer? No? I'm just a weirdo? Okay. I have to push back really hard against my procl

Here's something I've been wondering that maybe some smart hackernews-ian can explain to me. I watched a spider build a web last night. A ton of extremely complicated engineering went into it, all driven by pure instinct, presumab

I think another big problem is that women will try out a new site until they have one stalkerish experience, and then they're gone forever. So each new site has a shelf life.

The worst thing Elon has done to Twitter imo is elevate the paid blue checks to the top of the comment stream. The replies usually had the best information, and were my favorite part of the site. Now I have to scroll past dozens or hundreds

This is exactly my experience. I almost never smoke weed, and only do when I'm in a comfortable place and among friends. Shrooms is more of a mid-level body/sensory experience for me, whereas pot is a deep dark journey into the re

That's uplifting to hear. So far my friend has seemed more or less okay for a couple months. Fingers crossed. I honestly had no idea if these things could just go away on their own. It sounds like it's possible at least.
