Landlording poses significant risks which you also must take into account. Thus if your net worth is 500k and all of it is in a rental unit, what happens if your renter floods the house or damages it in some other way? What happens when you

See above. The amount is irrelevant. Deducting interest is good. However, you must take into account the costs of amortization, real estate taxes, and the costs of borrowing money. Check the NYT calculator. Owning wins out in an up market a

See my post above. Once you pay off the mortgage it is equivalent to paying yourself out a percentage of cash investment. In NYC that number is approximately 4.5%. That is pretty good but not great considering the risks of ownership.

The amount is irrelevant, since you are making the same percentage on whatever sum investment. I think you are using a non-technical definition of liquidity: I can convert ETFs or stocks into cash almost immediately. So for example, it is e

But the same could be said about money in the bank: it is insurance against not being able to make the next rent payment. Saving money is the right thing to do---putting all of your savings into immovable property may not be.

Re: renting is wasting money. Think of the math this way. A $1mil condo in New York generates approximately 45k/yr income, or 4.5% return on investment per year in rents. Subtract taxes and amortization and ask yourself, can you get si

Great post. I disagree on using the concise form of the if statement, however. if [ "$var" = "find" ]; then echo "found" fi Is far more readable than its equivalent [ "$var" = "f

I am thinking of a constructive way to solve problems such as these. What do you think of making public the host's acceptance and rejection rate by race and gender?

I think that happens when the org system is too complicated. I use a single file txt TODO list with three sections: red, yellow, and green. Each section contains a prioritized list of tasks. I delete the line when done and push to git. The

An impressive tool and website. Like others in this thread I use a plain txt file + git to manage my todos. Simplicity trumps any other feature for me. Unix tools are a bonus.

Hmm. The problem with that approach is that among many things that mean nothing in your inbox, there are some that are quite meaningful. And these have the potential to get lost among the noise.

No worries. There's always more to learn. `dw` is a motion command as in "delete to the end of the word. `daw` is a text object command as in "delete a word." There is also a difference between `daw` and `diw`, which is

It is not quite the same, as per above comment. `daw` will delete the word regardless of the cursor position. Vim has the idea of text objects beyond "end of the word."

I've had a HP LaserJet 1020 since 2005, when I paid around $100 for it. A refurbished one today costs $200+, which means it actually went up in value. It is small, fast, and works on third party cartridges that I pay 10-20$ for. Beside
