Styrbord is not germanic, but old norse and literary means the rudder (i.e. steering board), which, as you said, was located on the right side of the ship. Viking ships could therefore only dock on the left-side, hence port for the port sid

If you want to go down this road, doing mobile cross-platform native, Xamarin seems much more compelling. It is supported by a very good IDE and has proper licensing for distribution on the app stores. https://visualstudio.micros

Because you have to license your iOS App as GPL if you want to use this framework. GPL is not compatible with the AppStore terms. They say they plan to dual license with a (free) commercial license in the future...

Swift has easy access to pthread mutex and you can do that. serialQueue.async { // Critical section } is GCD's way of doing the same with the added benefit that the calling code does not have to wait. Problems in the parent c

That’s a very Cartesian world view on biology, luckily abandoned a long time ago. Animals where merely automatons and scientists dissecting dogs alive could gleefully ignore their cries as nothing more than automatic response stimuli. Today

Using probability is a good start I think. As I understand it, CERN should be able to find new particles below about 2–3 TeV in energy. It hasn't and physicists say it’s a reasonable assumption that there might not be anything new to f

I thought particle physics were coming to an end? After CERN found the Higgs boson then nothing. The ROI of a more powerful accelerator is abysmal. It is impossible to know how large a new collider needs to be and if anything interesting wi

Your post is like a reverse shit sandwich. There is some meat between the crap. In the context of meetings, though which this article was about, I think PG is right on the money. Though it is hardly breaking news.

I do not fully agree with the premise that C programmers don't know what's best for them and need to be educated to switch to C++. I do agree that C++(14++) isolated is a better programming language in many ways compared to C. The

Oh shiny, but does it blend? I mean, Stripe has a great API, great design and this, but is Stripe a good payment solution? No, it is not, especially for sellers. Fraud and charge backs are worse than with PayPal. Despite its many shortcomin

CS jobs in the west are victims of Globalisation. We simply cannot compete with Asia and Eastern Europe with regards to wages. Hence outsourcing which has been ongoing for decades. We _can_ compete on quality and solutions, but these are hi

Most users will accept issues with their free program if the alternative is to pay. I'm pretty sure the message pane you have there is a WebKit controller so it is debatable how native this would be.

The closest successor to Firefly, Dark Matter (minus the cowboy thing) only just made it to season 2 but is now renewed for season 3 by reducing production costs and selling older seasons to Netflix. The new way people are watching TV is on

That is naive. Yes, trivial out of bounds memory errors can be prevented, but no language can prevent (accidental) resource leakage which opens up for other vulnerabilities. Besides, most modern languages are written in C/C++ anyway so
