Oh shiny, but does it blend? I mean, Stripe has a great API, great design and this, but is Stripe a good payment solution? No, it is not, especially for sellers. Fraud and charge backs are worse than with PayPal. Despite its many shortcomings, PayPal has at least a much better fraud protection system. This is what matters or should matter when choosing a payment solution. Shiny stuff is great, but if the engine is made with rubber-bands, you won't get very far.
- Gaelan 9y agoReferences?
- exhilaration 9y agoStripe provides fraud protection? I thought they were just a (really awesome, developer-friendly) payment processor and you'd need to put something like Kount in front of them to do your own fraud protection.
- ceejayoz 9y agoThe fraud protection is a fairly recent offering. https://stripe.com/radar https://stripe.com/radar I've personally had good results with it, but admittedly at lowish volume.
- sovande 9y agoRadar, smack there in the left-menu, is Stripe's Fraud "prevention" system. You can register and mark fraudulent purchases to improve the machine learning system behind Radar (sure). You can setup rules such as "Block if CVC verification fails" (really and can be disabled). At least, Stripe is trying to address the problem. Unfortunately, not with great success at the moment, but I'm sure/hope it will improve. We use both PayPal and Stripe and the difference is like a green meadow compared to a green toxic waste dump with regards to charge backs and fraud.
- brightball 9y agoFwiw, you can roll your own fraud warning system independent of payment solution: https://www.maxmind.com/en/minfraud-services https://www.maxmind.com/en/minfraud-services
- benrahn 9y agoHi -- I work on the fraud team at Stripe. Last October we introduced Stripe Radar ( https://stripe.com/radar https://stripe.com/radar ) a suite of integrated tools to help you beat fraud. While different businesses see different patterns of fraud, we believe that overall our fraud prevention is now as good or better than essentially every other product in the industry. This partly follows from Stripe’s scale: whenever a card is used, there’s now an 80+% chance that we’ve seen it before. We use this data from the global Stripe network to detect and prevent fraud with ML models that we’re constantly updating and refining. We’d love to hear what would make us work better for you. My email is brahn at stripe.com.
- thinkMOAR 9y agoAh machine learning.. I've studying that the last few months. Cant say i got much more wiser on it, as 99% of the examples and explanation out there is regarding classifying images. And not so much about handling structured data. Is there are public information on how ML is implemented at stripe? And you write that > 80% of the worlds issued cards are in the stripe db because they are once used via stripe? Are you sure about this number? Can't say im much impressed by this sql interface 'feature'; It's more opening low level access then a feature, but that is just my humble opinion. And it is of course nice for techies having to work with, instead of specific 3rd party APIs. Will there also be plain (not plaintext but simple) replication interfaces/APIs in the future that clients can run sql slave nodes (mysql/postgresql) with near realtime replication for local querying (privacy) and backup purposes? (and being able to continue to use the data even if stripe would be unaccessible/down)?
- alam2000 9y agoStripe has higher chargeback rate compare to other gateway but they provide really good API. You can use 3rd party fraud screening service such as FraudLabs Pro to compensate the Stripe weakness. It cut down our chargeback rate to less than 0.5% and we are happy.
