Sure, and the fact that many, MANY people have experienced this height-bias, and women openly admit to preferring it is entirely my imagination. I think this 'think positively and it will be' stuff is more than a little wishful thinking. It

I'm not so sure, a woman desiring a strong man to protect them sounds pretty evolutionary. Isn't the whole pick up artist thing based on exploiting such?

May I ask how tall you are? I am not trying to be facetious, just curious. I agree that it's a numbers game, assuming you are at least vaguely viable.

I looked a lot better, but there was definitely still flab. You exclude the possibility that other factors outweighed (no pun intended) the weight issue? We're talking > 55lb, so it obviously had a major visual impact. I don't believe i

Obviously online, I have frequently attempted contact, before reaching a stage where I could ask that, but that was the purpose. In real life, I have usually not got so far as to ask for a date, as I have been rejected out of hand before ge

Thanks, that's kind! I am overweight right now too, that photo was when I was lighter (recently) - I lost loads, then gained again partly due to anti-depressants, partly due to feeling there was no point in keeping it off. I think confidenc

Assuming you're >= av. height, and of reasonable relative social standing... For a tall person height isn't a factor at all. They could say that as height isn't a problem for them.

I would be more than willing to do that, if I believed it was as much of a factor as height/looks/cocky confidence. I actually experimented with this, lost > 55lb in weight, worked really hard, and it made no difference. None. As you ca

I think it's a matter of prerequisites. Women will look at you as a friend instead of a potential partner if you don't fit them. That's when all the nice-guy stuff of kindness, etc. that many women claim to be what they're looking for (and

Citation required? Women might say this, but in my experience it's simply not true. Like the whole 'love yourself so others can love you' line. Which is just B.S. in my experience. Having said that, I agree confidence makes a huge differenc

No, I'm not. Anybody who's tried in real life as well as online, knows what an impact these factors have, especially height, irritatingly given its arbitrariness in western society. I spent months trying online, have tried in real life, par

Yeah, the thing is, after that many messages sent, done thick-skinnedly, in a big pool, with a friend who also is short, though slightly taller (5'7"), with him doing significantly better, and after lots of previous attempts AND lots of att

It's not, just exaggerated, as facing 100 emails in your inbox vs. some guy face-to-face is a different proposition I think. Perhaps a distillation of my point is - 'do dating sites give false hope to undateable people?' I'd love to see the

I remember seeing this thing on TV where people with disabilities attempted to find dates, and a ~ 3' woman who featured on it said she preferred men >= 6'. QED.

Have tried many, paid/non-paid, with same outcome. And shorter women hilariously still generally prefer >= av. height men. It seems to be a major genetic thing. I shouldn't gonzo myself into this too much, as I've decided to give up on

I don't think anybody owes me anything, sure, of course. Personally, I took the attitude of optimising profile, contact endless women using advice from those successful on the site to elicit replies, play the numbers game. My point is that

For a certain subset (perhaps minority) of the population, these sites are nothing but a bait-and-switch. And I think dating sites attract many of us (as I am indeed a member of this subset.) I'm talking about people who lack the pre-requis

There is a significant difference in that Go Daddy has specifically engaged in bad business practices, whereas namecheap appear to care about not doing that, so it's not so much about size as behaviour.

It's funny to see this as I (and I suspect probably many others) felt compelled to take a screenshot when this happened, because it was so bizarre to see the front page consist of a single story - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/140966/hn_jobs.png

Not to be too off-topic, but this sort of instant nasty cynicism is all that's wrong with HN of late. One of the rules of this place is 'be polite', would you respond like that to a stranger in person? This kind of reaction makes me not wan

Really awesome article @jacquesm, I love these intricate, in-depth, long struggling-for-a-labour-of-love stories. In fact, not to wax overly lyrical, I think a lot of stories that appeal to people in general follow that pattern. Something a

Hm the conclusion there appears to be that claims for it aren't based on research as there is very little, which the parent acknowledges. The weight loss claims here are of course anecdotal, but it certainly seems worth a try, given that it
