There were a lot of things developed more than 140 years ago that we still use. For example, let's take the rocket engine, developed by the Chinese in the 13th century. I believe a very similar engine was used to put man in space. What is

Yes, it is laborious and must be memorized -- just like our multiplication tables back in 2nd grade. Learning is not always fun, nor should it be.

I find that overly optimistic that qwerty will go away by the time his 18-month-old is an adult. QWERTY has been with us for over 100 years, and I see little need to throw it out. It is a good, functional, accessible, and consistent tool fo

Dear Katie, Welcome to business, now grow up. I agree that the "lighten up" strategy is tiresome and ineffective. I don't know you, but it seems you need to grow some thicker skin and learn to hit back. Do you think Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorn

This political correctness crap must stop. So what if some young dude-bros made a bad joke? Personally, I found the spelling errors were more appalling. Rather than instituting immature zero-tolerance policies, a better course of action wou

I saw some tech-tricked-out cars like this at SXSW this year. All I could think was, "distracted driving." I fear the roads are going to become more dangerous as manufacturers integrate more screen technologies into the auto.

Funny you mention django and python -- I've wanted to learn it but didn't want to invest the time with python :-) Lesson reciprocated!

You cannot simply substitute software for music, literature, or film. It does not work that way.

Jump right in. Follow the TODO example line by line and modify it into something that you own. That should be enough to get your head wrapped around the "Backbone way." Also, IRC has been a good place to get help. #documentcloud on irc.free

The ivory-tower relativist view may give him a pass, but in the real world this turkey is cooked. And that is total BS that you would compare people with mental problems to Jewish people or those born physically disabled. Yes, I twisted you

Perhaps I should have been more clear on reading the room: It is not a collective, 500 person room. There may be 15 people in the room, but only two or three attendees that actually matter. They must be seated in direct line-of-site to the

I don't think we will have to worry too much about old file formats like JPEG, TIFF, and GIF. The formats are well-documented, and the GIF format is 25 years old this year. Also, I found this to be very relevant: http://www.kk.org/thetechn

Do you delete the photos that are just plain worthless? Blurry, cropped poorly, etc? Or are you just keeping all of it because storage is cheap?

1. I've never seen a company where HR was impenetrable. 2. For cross-continental meetings, substitute coffee for phone call. Or serendipitously turn up at a conference, a panel, or in the executive wash room. This is all the easier with twi

I think it is important to note that author is speaking in broad, generational terms. The HN community is definitely not representative of Gen-Y. I know many 20 and 30-somethings to whom the internet is a series of tubes. Though the author
