I'd like to be able to press a shortcut key and have my computer save a screenshot of whatever I'm looking at, along with letting me type a brief note for context. Ideally it would also record the URL of whatever the browser was v

It seems like PDFs might still work in a hundred years. Just like zip files. Fun fact: HN's been around for 10% of a century. That makes Arc one of the longer-lived programming languages. Re: the ability to take books off the shelf and

I tried to treat you like a not-dictator and to express my concerns in a reasonable manner. You reacted as a dictator. Banning my accounts does nothing but drive me underground for three months. You don't know all of my accounts, unles

It would be great, wouldn't it? That sounds delightful, and I would be happy to. Just one quick question: Why was my account rate limited solely for commenting – substantively, on-topic, and in an intellectually gratifying way – about

So for the past two weeks, there have been "hotel workers on strike!" protests in Chicago. They've been outside banging pots and pans, blowing whistles, and generally making a lot of noise to raise awareness for their cause.

Yes it does. Literally doing anything other than blindly using their products and not giving a shit is standing up to them. It doesn't matter whether you're smart or not – anyone can do this. It doubly stands up to them if you mak

To answer your question, yes, I do. It makes paying attention to what people are saying very difficult. I have to ask them to repeat exactly what they just said word for word, not because I didn't understand, but because I didn't

Meanwhile in Ameriburger, the kids tear each other to shreds. It sounds like the educational opportunities you got were what I spent years fantasizing about, wondering if there was anything better than going from mostly-dead teacher to most

Or better yet, bring back apprenticeship and give them something to do other than worthless high school. I almost didn't get my first programming job because I had to be paid under the table at 17 due to child labor laws. If you want t

I read an article (blogpost?) by one of the Apollo programmers who presented a very elaborate argument saying that the Apollo mission would have ended in disaster if not for one very specific code change that happened by accident. Sadly I h

Java is just as fast or faster than C++ most of the time. No one who writes high performance code for a living makes that claim. It's true though. https://lmax-exchange.github.io/disruptor/files/Disruptor-1.

The point of a tracing JIT is that it runs code in an interpreter, then generates machine code for loops and hot spots. By doing this at runtime you can take advantage of knowledge that a C compiler doesn't have. This is why LuaJIT is

This isn’t true. GC’d languages can be as fast or faster than C. Especially LuaJIT.

Hmm, no need to feel like that. There are so many wonderful things in the world. Creativity is additive — even if you only do something small, it still matters.

Suppose you were born an octopus, with your current level of intelligence. What would you do? How would you demonstrate it? Note how difficult it would be to communicate. I think many animals are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.
