I think it's great you have an open API. That's awesome. But I think it's also not about what users theoretically could do (if they were able), it's about making it as easy to get data out as you are making it to get data in. If you did tha

Posterous should spend a day creating an easy export from their own service to prove they aren't afraid of competition. Then they would come out of these 2 weeks not looking like jerks. The blog post to Tumblr users still rankles me.

"Self-employment" doesn't mean what we think of entrepreneurship. PG has the great metaphor two saplings, one of them is a redwood sapling, it's expecting to grow. On that measure we don't create self-employment with entrepreneurship we cre

There have been a few JavaScript accessibility arguments over the years. The main thrust goes like this: 1a) Screen readers (e.g. JAWS) don't support JavaScript properly 1b) Only very modern screen readers support JavaScript properly (JAWS

One of the best current reasons to have a fall back is performance. It turns out that 100% JavaScript web sites have a horrible performance profile. Having just got back from Velocity conference I can say half the performance talks were abo

The IE9 preview-release they talked about at Velocity does and it sounds like other browser manufacturers are in given the discussion on the browser panel, but as usual that means it's 2 years before it's useful.

Steve definitely kicked "high performance" into overdrive at Y!, but he's one of many people who have contributed from Yahoo: Stoyan Stefanov write weekly about performance on his blog http://www.phpied.com/ and actually just released "We

That's a really good point, it's actually a constraint of the architecture of the web. This framework is based on our own research of the best way to reliably measure page performance is across page loads. Boomerang itself is actually a gen

One of the other reasons they'll win is they respect their customers. I installed the B&N app on my iPad. First it came with a lot of samples I didn't want (Sarah Palin, really) and the only way I found to delete them from the device wa

I just don't buy the premise. Kids get interested in programming by being able to create things. Back in the day creating things meant getting any kind of text/ascii on the screen was an achievement. Now, kids want to learn how to do things

Do it for a year. Make $200k and then get out to do something for you. Unless you like the job. Personally it's one of those of those industries, like defense, I don't think I'd want to work for long term interesting problems or not.

Do you share your anti forgery strategy? That sounds like it would make a very useful open source library. That would probably improve your security too.

I regularly have the same problem. When my American wife and I got married (in the UK) we joined names, which is a perfectly legal name change. My UK passport now reads Thomas Henry Hughes-Croucher. However her US password reads Rosemarie H

I think it's interesting that Zed considers Github/Bitbucket weaknesses. What most open-source projects need more than self-hosting is contributors. Portability is great but I'd rather have a project that I'm working with other people.

Anyone care to suggest some ideas on a few things: a) who would likely buy these (corporates, SMEs, startups)? b) it seems that they have increased the risk of single point of failure (e.g. 1 PSU taking down 128 nodes) what's the mitigation

"Copyleft hardware is not nearly as widespread as copyleft software" The core premiss is still true. And it's a huge factor difference. Even if you can cite counter examples, or things they missed the amount of software development happenin
