I remember that! And look, even back then Microsoft was embracing Flat Design: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/images/press/t... I think the moral of the story is that everybody 's design sucked in 1999…

If you reversed all shadows and gradients, wouldn't your active control's lighting become completely inconsistent with the rest of your interface? Or did I misunderstand? But you're right that flat design takes away some of these tools. Tha

I also wrote about why and how I wrote this essay here: http://sachagreif.com/making-flat-pixels/ Basically it was a good exercise in responsive design, and was also a chance for me to try out publishing a book on Amazon. And since this i

I'm certainly not saying that skeuomorphism is bad, and I don't think anybody that knows what they're talking about is saying that. And it's also important to keep in mind that skeuomorphism and realism are two different things. But it's de

That's a good point, and in any case pixel art is not that far from pointillism or other mosaic-based artforms.

I have a hard time understanding your point, but I think you're confusing pixel art and bitmap images.

Have you seen Telescope? http://telesc.pe It's basically an open-source HN clone built with Meteor, it's a good place to get an overview of the various features you need to build a useful app.

Having a strong brand is not something you can measure via A/B testing, it's a long-term commitment.

What does Pen.fm do? And we haven't really decided on this yet, I don't think we'll need to use LaTeX but we'll see. Any suggestions are welcome :)

Of course, we'll make sure the book is up to date with the latest version whenever it comes out. And we'll also provide updates if any major change come out in the months after the book's release.

Interested to know how people think it compares to Telescope ( http://telesc.pe ), which is more of a traditional HN-clone social news app (also open source by the way). (I also posted in the other topic, sorry for the double post but I'm r

You're right, the price of such a service would probably be much higher. If I took an audit of how much time I spend on this stuff monthly, I'm guessing paying $200-500 would not seem out of proportion. Anyway it's just speculation at this

That's definitely a concern. Can't say I have an answer, except to say that someone unqualified (in this case, me) taking care of it isn't great for security either.

Well, I can't really agree with this. Filming a movie and viewing a movie are two completely different experiences and take place in completely different environments, even if the medium is the same. What you're saying would be like saying

Except in many cases you can't make layout decisions without also considering fonts and visual style. This is why Photoshop and Illustrator are still the best tools for web design: they enable relatively quick wireframing, but also give you

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm probably not the only one wondering that: how do you capture the video from the iPhone screen in the first place? [Edit: oh, just realized you're probably just using the simulator?] Otherwise, awesome

This sounds like it would make a great book or movie. It's scary to know you can send someone to jail for 3 month, but at the same time knowing how you did it would be quite interesting.

To be fair, any of those ideas could produce a great startup with the right team behind it… That's the thing, the idea alone is pretty much meaningless one way or another.

You should also A/B test those photos to increase the conversion rate. For example, have you thought about replacing those landscapes with photos of smiling businesspeople in suits? And I noticed you're not even asking people to sign up for

Just see it as a transaction: your email and permission to send you at least one newsletter (you can always unsubscribe) in exchange for the book. Asking for a download without having to give your email is a little strange, after all the bo
