Themeforest has free files, but they're only free for one month as far as I know. They don't want to get their users into the habit of getting stuff for free, which is smart.

I might be wrong, but I don't think that can work if you want to accept credit cards directly in order to keep customers on your site for the whole checkout process. These type of solution also rarely let you set up recurring payments.

To clarify his point about high resolution displays: they do make one very important design element look better, and that's typography. Whereas on a low-resolution display a flat, typography-based design might look empty and bland, on a hi-

Maybe I'm over-simplifying things, but it seems to me that it's obvious that Apple is doing very well, and there's no money in stating the obvious. So "experts" are simply embracing the whole "Apple is doing bad" meme out of contrarianism,

Good question. Maybe Apple's success? But I do believe there's a self-reinforcing meme thing going on where design is the new hot topic. Not that I'm complaining, as a designer.

First of all, this looks very nice and I have nothing bad to say about this particular product at all. But I can't help but wonder why there are so many apps like this. Off the top of my head there's Notable, LayerVault, Shipment, Cage, Mar

The only argument in favor of CSS not being the most horrible thing ever invented is that as far as I know, nobody has come up with a better alternative yet…

It's possible that the text color has been changed since you wrote this, but it's now at #333333. If you have trouble reading that on a white background, then the problem is with your screen, not with the page.

Agreed. These are great books, but "design for hackers" implies that these book will help you "hack" design, which they won't. These books will help you get a better understanding of the principles of good design at root level, but they won

This is the kind of game that would shine as an iOS game. I love the concept and would gladly pay for the game, but the browser is just such a bad gaming platform…

Telescope dev here. Meteor supports a lot of different authorizations, so changing this is literally just one line of code. I just picked Twitter because that's what I personally like to log in with best.

I can only speak for myself, but the reason I use Meteor ( http://telesc.pe ) is because I believe that while it's not perfect right now, it has a bright future ahead of it. The Meteor devs themselves will acknowledge that some features are

Might I mention that I'm building an open-source HN clone with Meteor? It's a great starting point if you want to build your own HN-style community, and it's also the only real-time HN clone as far as I know: http://telesc.pe

It's easy to pick extreme examples to make it seems like designer obsess over unimportant details. But a designer that cares about the exact shade of blue or creating different versions of assets for each sizes will also care about making s

The claim isn't supported by common sense either. I doubt 25% of users even heard about the new ToS, let alone acted on it.

Without knowing how many hours Nathan spent on the book, it's hard to say if 26k is a lot of money or not. I think it's pretty good, but it's not like Nathan is earning 26k a day every day, it's basically just once or twice a year. And if y

Wow. It's so interesting to see how our own biases can completely transform the meaning of what we're reading. Where did I bash Windows RT? How am I an Apple fanboy when this article barely mentions Apple, and only to say designers are gett

I didn't say that it was impossible to have good content hierarchy with a flat design, I just said it was harder. And "citation needed" is the Hacker News equivalent of YouTube comments: snarky, doesn't bring anything to the debate, and t

The thing that seems different about IV is that they try really hard to not seem like a patent troll. I find it a little insulting, at least the other trolls are pretty straightforward about it and don't try to pretend they're coming up wit
