One very early pseudo-3D game (perhaps the first?) was Sega's Fonz, which drew a not-really-perspective-corrected road using discrete logic. AFAIK it hasn't even been emulated by MAME yet. Oh yeah, and shameless plug for my 6502 I

I'm guessing after some prototype work had been done. I've seen another version of the doc with a back page describing the saucers, which weren't fleshed out until later in the process. Another account describes the game as a

While researching for a book I learned that Asteroids was inspired by three different games: Spacewar! (the seminal PDP-1 video game), Computer Space (Atari's derivative of Spacewar) and Space Invaders . The control scheme comes

It's also easy to run an attack ad saying "Rep. X voted to keep job-killing Obama regulations" without saying exactly what the regulation was so the potential voter never questions whether they might have wanted it in place.

On early pre-production Atari vector games, you could burn a hole in the phosphor all the way to the glass if you left the electron gun active too long without moving the beam. They added a "spot killer" circuit that turned the be

You know, I have never found a "casual" book covering tree-search techniques, from minimax to Monte Carlo Tree Search. Still relevant for game/agent AI (AlphaGo used MCTS for example). You'd think there would have been 1

The Atari 2600's TIA made use of these pseudorandom counters, too, for the current horizontal raster position of sprites and other objects. As a result, the programmer couldn't set the position directly -- you'd have to wait

This looks like a pretty nutty technique, essentially exploiting an undocumented state (or bug?) in the VIC chip. The Atari 2600's TIA had lots of sharp corners caused by the reliance on polynomial counters, which saved silicon but mad

Activision was the first third-party Atari 2600 developer, but they didn't have to reverse-engineer the system from scratch -- they were all defectors from Atari. They did invent plenty of nifty tricks, though. One podcast talks about
