Only in very special country with "special" gun laws, those kind of articles would be needed. One could argue that other countries would solve the underlying problems through other approaches than bulletproof backpacks (i.e. chang

I think it's perfectly fine to quit a PhD. It's not for everyone, and not every academic is a good supervisor, and not every phd project is a good one. Some people who even are not great academically and don't have a lot of s

The problem is that Russia has a sea blockade not allowing Ukrainian ships with grain to leave ports. That's where the missiles could help. (in the same time Russia sells stolen from Ukraine grain itself).

I think if the set of rules underpinning an expert system is explicitly written down and available to everyone, and if it is possible to appeal your decision and request a human review, I don't mind this.

I think people are a bit too critical here, as people's view on weather are different, i.e. utility functions are different. As a person living in Edinburgh though, I can say the weather is not too bad, but certainly could be tad warm

I find this article dubuous (or lets say "thinly sourced"). I.e. this phase "its Starlink satellite broadband service, which was keeping Ukraine connected to the Internet" is just blatantly wrong. Yes they've send h

It's DAS. Mostly it's in one box of RAIDed 32x5.5Tb drives with a couple of tablespaces/WAL elsewhere. The DB is mostly read-only and not many concurrent users, so that's probably not the most typical case.

From just my personal experience, I've had a python code interfaced with C that I rewrote just for fun in pure julia. It was significantly slower then the C code and I couldn't as easily use OPENMP parallelization (although the sy

As many already noticed, the rise of Python is not counter-intuitive at all. (I'm a scientist myself). Basically modern python offers you a spectrum from easy to understand and quick to write python programs (those will be slow), to pu

Yes, that is okay with me and understandable. It's just if the West says, lets cut off the Internet from Russia, I think that will just help the Russian government, so therefore it's not a good idea in my book.

There is such thing as propaganda. It's when somebody explicitly controls what you can and what you can't say (among other things). CNN may be biased, sure and I have no problem with that (as with Foxnews), but with RT I have issu
