So by your logic, preparation for anything is paranoia?

Maybe not now. But you don't know what your life will look like in 10 years, or even 20. People end up in politics more than they ever imagined, out of necessity. It's the OpSec equivalent of holding something behind your back and

I hate that we feel the need to make everything boring and difficult, as though it's some sort of end-game goal to reach in every industry. Why must this be our default outlook on things?

Well I am. I have a right to. If you want to have plausible deniability when you inevitably must do something legally wrong but morally right, then you must always be hiding.

Working software in a place that isn't mainly software is actually really great. I write the internal systems and occasionally work on the customer-facing websites and applications at a small local manufacturing company. Definitely bet

I've thought about doing government tech-related work, but I really do not like the federal government. Especially lately. Vaccine mandates would have pushed me out of the field anyways. It's like being forced to take contraceptiv

It still does use a lot of memory, but thankfully most systems have that to spare, and CPU usage is much more optimal now thanks to native compilation.

Same here. I knew about RPN before Calc, and knew there were calculators that used it, but it seemed bizarre to me. Once I started using Emacs, I decided to see what Calc was all about, and finally realized how slick it feels. It's rea

Which is totally fair. I kind of despise the Emacs vs Vi(m) flamewars. I like them both. If I don't want to launch a several hundred megabyte program to edit a quick config or something, I'll launch any of Micro, Neovim, or Helix

This is a great take. Having been a kid that was super intrigued by CS, the classes were more a formality, and a place to ask the few questions I couldn't put into words very easily for an internet search. Not to say classes weren

Godot is one of those pinnacle FOSS projects that just totally impresses me, especially given the state its in now , with 4.0. It's so cool that a loose community of "The People" have created things like Godot, OBS, and Blen

Then I suppose we can end on a hard disagree. My point is the usage of technology can be good or bad, but technology is itself not good or bad.

You confuse me. People are interested in technology because its cool and neutral. All technology can be used for both good and bad things, and that's historically provable. Making specific areas of science off limits for virtue points

What? Military research has benefits outside of military use. V-2s became Saturn Vs on the way to the moon, which begat ICBMs. Haber-Bosch method gave us more fertilizer, but also more explosives. Lasers can be used for hair removal surgery
