The amount of entitlement some people feel from the authors of free software is quite surprising. It's twice as bad when those people are pirates . Honestly, I don't have a big problem with people pirating our software, especially when the

You can mitigate it by restricting how many people can be matched with a single email/SN. It's hard to try and out someone out of your whole class when you can only have 3 'crushes' to use; the odds are low unless you're pretty sure you kno

While it's great that Google lets you delete information, harvest-your-data-by-default is not a choice made with your best interests at heart.

It's probably more accurate to say that the infrastructure has gradually become... less amenable to cars, intentionally and otherwise. Bus lanes, pedestrianised roads, roadworks, that kind of thing.

Maybe not for you. I did a little calculation at http://listentotaxman.com/ and put in the minimum wage for a 37.5 hour week. If you need to take a few buses to get to work, over 10% of your £190 weekly pay packet gets eaten up on travel.

If you go back to the video game example, you have a list of saved games/characters and you can choose to delete a character. Pretty standard stuff. Now you add an undo button and you've gone from two actions to three actions. Furthermore,

The library has limited lending ability; you can't lend one book to two people at the same time. It will be very interesting to see how they handle ebooks. I'd be surprised if the publishers didn't enforce scarcity.

Only thing the BBC do is serve ads to non-UK viewers. The website is the same for everyone otherwise. BBC America is just a TV channel; that's why that website is entertainment-based.

It's not about money being there or not, government budgets don't work like that. It's about saddling the next generation with more and more debt. It's trading the future for short term gains.

You could make it up because it's been going on for years and years with no consequences to anyone involved. The digital age is good for a lot of things, but it was a lot harder to carry a filing cabinet, and thus harder to steal records.

Varying broadband speeds are why UK ISPs have to state 'up to X Mbps', since they can't guarantee the customer they will get the advertised maximum. Unfortunately, this makes it easier for them get away with the 'unlimited' designation, sin

The problem is a standard can be 'open' yet restricted, i.e. you have to pay to distribute software using it. Can't pay? Can't give people the program. The tricks that LAME uses to work around MP3 encoding patents aren't going to work for b

Cloud computing is not all that different from old mainframe setups. It's just a lot more interactive (and with 40 years of technological advancement). So the still-relevant artifacts of that era are at home in the 'cloud'. Another comparis

Don't be fooled, that advertising campaign only used a 'sensible', similarly-named insurance business to introduce an unusual niche company[1] to the market. It's a clever ploy, you can read about it in Aleksandr Orlov's book that came out

Certainly, but you don't have to go as far back as that for an example: just compare the drive letters in Windows to the lack of them in Unix. It works very well in Lua's favour to stick to just the C library given the desire to use it in e
