Terrible post. The language is waffly and barely says anything, and the graph doesn't even work (orange hidden behind blue). Hope your product is more effective than your writing.

Interesting combo of disgusting and boring. Glad mayo-based sauces are getting the shellacking they deserve.

Interesting that it's such a conservative, opinion-less, air-tight piece. Guess its his technical writing background coming through.

Wolfram's "grid cell" concept is based on cellular automata (similar to Game of Life), where each cell has simple rules that, when taken together, add up to complex overall behavior (emergent phenomena). Following it further:

First time I've seen SNL linked on HN! Don't let the entities without functional humour modules scare you off.

I remember being thrilled by his 2015(?) piece (the really long "cellular automata as universal foundation" one). Felt like a proper stab at combining physics + CS, thin on details, but fertile ground. Wolfram is an explorer there

That doesn't sound right at all. In 2D space a line bisects the plane. There's no way of moving from one side to the other without touching it. The possibility space of images is much, much larger than 2D.

Device use is where smoking was 50 years ago. Everyone does it, most people kinda know it's bad for you. It's like eating candy instead of actual meals, doesn't have the balanced macros and vitamins of proper engagement+inter

For me, it's a "man behind the mask" thing. Clowns play big, with exaggerated expressions and responses. The incongruence between the acting and the person behind the acting wigs me out.

Impressive! Very valuable work for the future, opens the door to a lot of use cases. How specialized is your architecture to the dataset?

I was a 'gifted' child. IQ tested at 160+, graduated high school at 13. Feels like it's been an albatross around my neck that I'm only starting to shake. A lot of my self-worth came from being recognized as special. When

I know the feel, but I also think this is misplaced anxiety. Work can be difficult, stressful, feel pointless, etc, which is why we get paid to do it. And you need some level of stress to get over the hump and get it done, to fight off comp

The ones that have stood the test of time are masterpieces of storytelling. They shine insight into a facet of life. They have a strong throughline, a message without moralizing. The best ones ground an experience to make it tangible to par

Sure, practically, it would have been more efficient to go Sweden-style scorched earth. What I want done better next time, is building an "off switch" into the messaging. It should have been made clear from the start that COVID wa

A lot to unpack (read - wildly speculate about) here. 10,000 generations ago. Like the next one but less of a "solved game". 1000 generations ago - Old men coupling with young women reads as small-scale tribal society to me. Polyg

The writing is bad, but the sci-fi elements blend with history and real life perfectly. There's a reason Obama gave a blurb for it. There are great threads in there. The dark forest as an illustration of paranoia matches up with the cu

Thats a lot less cheaty, biologically speaking, than full backprop. This Hinton guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about. "Context drift as data distribution changes" sounds a hell of a lot like real life to me. Norma

Legit genius, there's still so much to mine from that. I would love word2vec for arbitrary media. The interpolating ML algos are half there, like the one that interps between musical genres, or the music video image generator one. Ther

Love the analogy. For years after school I found myself going into "test mode", a timeboxed intellectual fight to the death. Works great when the work gets distilled to a number and thrown away, not so well when you have to keep w

Exercise is the same way, lots of effort to stay in the same place. I like to believe that maintenance work makes me better, even though the numbers don't really change. At least it gets easier to keep it up over time.

I'm guessing the risk on Stripe's side is that OP (or someone else!) is using a bunch of stolen credit cards to make purchases. If there are a lot of chargebacks, Stripe's on the hook for that.
